I am reminded, as Cleopatra is being released today on Blu Ray, that
I saw it here in 70mm. Arrived late after drive up from Tucson and
was happy to have gotten balcony seats. Too bad Phoenix could not
have saved The Fox and The Cine Capri also.
Hi ClassicProjectionist You must mean either Dan Traweek or Tim McClanahan. Yes, I knew both Ben Osuna and his Father. Also know Fred Zimmerman. Was Chuck Steger Manager when you worked there?

Gonzalo Martinez Jr.,I knew your father for a lot of years. He was a Union Brother and I was proud to call him my friend.
Kent Peterson, You last posted here in 2004. As knowledgeable as you seem to be, I’m wondering if you are related to Carl Peterson; once owner of a service and supply business in Salt Lake. When I last heard of him, he was Director of Projection Engineering for Pacific Theaters. I knew him from projectionist days at Catalina in Tucson.
El Dorado was first theater in Tucson 70mm equipped. First 70mm
film was “Gone With The Wind”.
Manager: Edward Congelli, Assistant: Linda Wallace
Projectionist: Frank Lauerman
The Buena Vista did have 70mm projection capability…at least according to trade reports and projector manufacturer ads. As well, Dolby installation records show a CP100 was installed in the late 1970s.

I was projectionist at BV and installed projection equipment in BV I
and BV II. No 70mm. Maybe you are thinking of El Dorado around corner and up the street.
BV I and BV II: Simplex XL 35 projectors
Simplex sound
JBL speakers
El Dorado: Century 35/70 projectors
Altec tube amplifiers
Dolby CP 100
In DC with my high school senior class in 1953, we saw “Down Among The Sheltering Palms” with Mitzi Gaynor and William Lundigan. Stage show was The Andrews Sisters.

We shall continue to be patient… :)
Much of The Vista success is owed to Manager Fred McSpadden.
Mr Mac, as he was affectionately known. He was the best.
Ennis, You are correct.

Re: “Star Wars”
Wish I owned 10% of that “Overrated and it Sucks”
What a dumb thing to say.
Kirk,70mm projectors were never installed in BV.

Michael, Are you sure the opening attraction was not “A Man For All
Seasons”?
Worked at Strand, Cobb, Bell, Martin DriveIn and Fair Oaks DriveIn.
1954-1955. City Manager was James Zimmerman. Nice booth in Strand.
