This is a different theater then the one in the movie. You’re thinking of the mall theater. This is the one that used to be across the street from Nathans(?) down the street. In the 80s it had a Coconuts Record store adacent to it in a mini-mall…
I used to live directly across the street from this theater in 1968/1969 (the house on the corner). My mother used to take us kids to triple features of Hammer and other classic horror flicks there. The Witches left a great impression and it was my first exposure to Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Great times. They also used to show Godzilla flicks during this time.
I seem to remember it was called the Miami Gardens 183rd Street Theater after it lost the Jerry Lewis designation. Actually it probably should have been called the Carol City theater.
I don’t on the otherhand remember it as a first run theater even when it opened. Most often it showed second-rate fare: Policewoman, Twilight People, The House That Dripped Blood, Sinbad, Boxcar Bertha, and The Incredible Melting Man were the type fare I saw in the theater.
I don’t remember the movie but the last time I visited the theater n the early 80s it was in great disrepair with broken furniture in the corners, torn drapes, broken seats, and it stunk to high heaven as if rats had died somewhere. Not a pleasent experience and it was shortly before it closed. And no it wasn’t a porn movie…
Also showed Raider of the Lost Ark, Star Trek II, Black Stallion, Incredible Machine, and Superman II. Also was the first movie theater I saw a filmed local advertisement at before the movie started (1970s – WPLG News crew playing instruments).
What was the name of the drive-in on 27th AV and 170th St of so. Lived directly across the street from the entrance (corner house) for a short time in 1969?
Used to go frequently in the mid-late 70s/early 80s. Biggest theater in the North Miami area I believe and a really nice place to watch movies. Wasn’t doing well in the early 80s and started to play older movies. Saw a twin bill of 60s James Bond films there and it was just me and another guy.
The place used to also have kid summer club showings. These were quite fun when I was a kid…
Southland Theater was my home away from home from the late-70s to early 80s. Used to go there nearly every week. $1 for a double feature…you couldn’t beat it. Saw more bad slasher films after Halloween came out (saw it there as well) than I care to admit. What was even better was the owner didn’t card for R movies so parents needn’t know what movies their kid was seeing.
Must have seen 100s of movies there. Superman, Phase IV, Boogey Man, Saturday Night Fever, Hard Times, Great Waldo Pepper, All the President’s Men, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Porky’s, Demolition Alley…hell I could go on for a couple pages.
The Golden Glades Drive-In did indeed have two screens; one on opposite ends of the property parallel to the Palmetto. My father used to take us there quite frequently. Saw MASH and Tora Tora Tora during that time. Later as a teenager I used to sneak into the drive-in frequently via the house adjacent to the property (had a friend who lived there). Saw The Omen, Lipstick, and Star Wars more times than I care to count during this time.
The property now sits on a self storage lot…
