Either this address is wrong or the street numbers have changed since it was in business. This location is now 4201 University Ave. and the building is being used as a market now.
here’s a link with a photo of the facade when it was The Admiral. Dig the See’s Candy store!

The Unicorn was a tiny theater in the back of a bookstore. I know I went there at least twice as a kid. I remember seeing Monty Python’s “And Now for Something Completely Different” – this would have been around ‘76 or '77, I think.
At the corner of Euclid and Federal there is the nearly vacant Metropolitan Shopping Center. I would bet that that’s the former location of the Rancho Drive-In. Either that or the grounds of Cox Communications across the street.
I agree with Brooklyn Jim. The Roxy was around until at least 1982. During its last days it was no longer a movie house and being used for bands. The Police played their first show in San Diego here in 1978 or ‘79. It was demolished to make room for a new post office.
It’s fun to see these photos of how it looks now. I grew up in Montecito Heights and this was our closest theater when I was a kid. Looks pretty much the way I remember it, other than being a triplex now.
FYI — The building is now used by an Urban Outfitter’s store. This was one of the three “A, B, C” theaters because of their names. Next to the Aztec was the Casino (now a Ghiradelli store) and across the street was the Bijou (now a steakhouse).
I have letterhead for “Chotiner’s Theatre” that shows it located at Vermont and 8th. I assume this is the same theater. The letter is dated Sept. 19, 1922, and signed by M.C. Chotiner.

Click on the photo tab, I just uploaded a better photo of the theater
ZIP code is wrong. Should be 91942
Tiki culture folks provide regular reports about this theater: http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=26718&forum=2&52

While this is no longer a theater, the building was not demolished. It’s now being used for a restaurant called Po Pazzo.

This multi-plex has been converted into an under-21 club called SOMA.
