I practically lived there on the weekends. My dad worked as a Projectionist there and at The Twin on Baxter Rd. and The Suburban Theater in Norfolk formerly located at Wards Corner now occupied by a recently built Harris Teeter.

The Indoor 8 Screener that replaced the Ultravision Twins outside Pembroke Mall was owned and operated first by Cineplex Odeon and then by Regal Cinemas. It was demolished a few years ago in favor of a Target Store.

Nighthawk. It was a Twin Ultravision !

Here is a birds eye view from Google Maps. Look to the upper right hand corner of the mall and you will see an massive open spot where they once stood. :(

My God I feel like I am re-living my childhood days here in Virginia Beach with our Ultravision Twins. Cineplex Odeon opened up their indoor Multiplex inside Pembroke Mall around 1989 and had the Twins tore down. To this day it still hurts seeing that they are gone. I loved the curved seating arrangement that complimented the structure of the buildings.

This was the exact model used here in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Ours was a Purpose Built Twin Screener. I practically lived there on the weekends when I could afford it. It was located at Pembroke Mall. When Cineplex Odeon opened up it’s indoor Multiplex They tore down those magnificent structures. Pisses still to end. They could have ran it as a “Cheap Budget Last Chance Cinema” Twin Screen to pump more money into their company.

I don’t live in Fla. but my heart is saddened by this video. I grew up in the late 70’s drive in era when cable tv and home video were driving the nails in to the drive in theater coffin. I pray that the good people in Lake Wales will come together and restore this beauty even if on a non for profit basis.

AdrianEverett commented about Kanopolis Drive-in re-opens after five years of dormancy on May 9, 2011 at 6:42 pm

If the new owners want to really make some serious money they should go green and get the place rigged with wind powered generators and solar panels. Since Kananpolis is a small town the town could possibly receive some of the unused power and the city power company could pay the DI Owners for unused energy and therefore the owners can easily buy digital or laser projectors.

The city of Portsmouth sucks ! They have the ability to better themselves but the city leaders are slack lazy. The Afton will no doubt will have to be bulldozed and rebuilt again from the ground up.

Hey that’s great another dark D I screen is firing up again tonight with the debut of Iron Man 2 after 2 decades of nothing. Drive ins either new or old, opening or re-opening, are going to be the Aids Virus of Multiplexes. They do not want you to go outside they want you inside where they can sell you over priced concessions. Drive Ins are able to show both 35 and 70mm format. Of course 70mm is the best there is and the studios know it. If I owned my own fresh start up D I I would go 70mm all the way. Imagine watching a towering movie with DTS 6 Track Sound pumping out your car speakers. Hey Santa Barbara, California, I wish you all the luck in the world with your newly reopened D I tonight.

AdrianEverett commented about Rave Cinemas Pittsburgh West 12 closing as of April 15 on Apr 8, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Although I do not live in Pittsbugh or anywhere near Pennsylvania I wonder why the management simply does not switch down to being a “Last Chance” multiplex ? Last Chance Multiplexes are just as viable as a First Runners. And Last Chance Multiplexes can offer cheap tickets in advance day or night.

AdrianEverett commented about Beach Theater on Oct 1, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Beach Theater is scheduled to become another cheesy Souvenier Shop on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The Haunted Funhouse locked up shop 2 years ago this Halloween and the VB Fire Marshall has declared it as Fire Hazard and the building is slowly but surely crumbling away. Already drafty spots have been found letting in outside air. This theater needs a multi million dollar face lift and needs a patron who will keep it open as a movie house.

Virginia Beach has the same thing going for it. Mount Trashmore Park has a movie under the stars night run by The Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation. They use film !

Well Beam Me up Scotty, it’s exactly 30 years later and Star Trek is once again coming to the theater screens. Granted this is nothing more than glorified over beating of a dead horse franchise but it seems Paramount and The Star Trek fans just cannot let go of the damned thing.

AdrianEverett commented about Crest Theatre on Jan 19, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Although I live on the East Coast in Virginia and have never seen this theater or have been to the West Coast of California for that matter I think this theater should be fully restorated for either live performances or the “Art House Movie Circuit”. I do agree that theaters like this cannot compete with the digitally enhanced Multiplexes of today but for those seeking an alternative and looking for an escape into something different, this theater and those like it can be great once again.

AdrianEverett commented about Naro Expanded Cinema on Jan 16, 2007 at 3:26 pm

From the early days as The Colley Theater to the current days as the Naro Expanded Cinema. This theater has stood the test of time and weather. Renovated 7 years ago the Naro has survived the brink of extinction thanks to Thom and Tench. Naro shows Mainstream and Independent Movies along with classics such as The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, It’s a Wonderful Life and Christmas Story. But Naro has one movie that simply refuses to lay down and die, The Rocky Horror Picture Show ! The 30th Anniversary of Rocky Horror Picture Show playing at the Naro is coming up in 2008. The Naro according to the local Rocky Horror Picture Show cast, Fishnet Inc. is the third longest running Rocky Horror Theater in the United States of America and the fourth longest running Rocky Horror Theater in the whole World. The Rocky Horror Picture Show plays every 2nd and 4th Friday or every 2nd and 5th Friday if that month has a 5th Friday all year round. The best time to see Rocky Horror Picture Show at it’s peak at the Naro is October. A grand total of 5 shows during that month. The usual scheduled shows plus Halloween Weekend has 3 extra shows added on. Guaranteed fun for all.

AdrianEverett commented about Suburban Theater on Jan 16, 2007 at 2:12 pm

I grew up here as a kid during the mid to late 1970s. My dad Charles Everett was the projectionist and my mom Evelyn was the Concessions Lady. I used to help my dad with the Marquee lettering located on top corner of the Kaybee Toy Store. The only way to access the marquee was through the Men’s Room Window which was located upstairs next the projection booth. The reason why Suburban was closed was because from 1979 to 1980 all that was playing was porn films. This brought about prostitutes to the area. Navy men would take these ladies of the night out into the adjoining neighborhoods and the rich people back there would complain to the city. The City of Norfolk had enough and ordered the Suburban closed once and for all. My mom and dad were there that final night and thankfully mom has one picture of the Marquee stating “Sorry We’re Closed” in her scrapbooks.
