That building is definitely the Chopin. You can see the eagle on top if you look closely. That eagle is still on top of the Burger King that is housed in the former lobby area.
Here’s a photo I took of the Chopin about two years ago:
As was discussed, the Ridgewood Theater will NOT survive ala the status quo. They have the biggest competition to the theater present now since perhaps the RKO Madison and Oasis closed! The somewhat rundown Ridgewood will HAVE to clean up it’s act to keep customers. The attractiveness of a nearby, clean, brandnew, state of the art multiplex is enough of a draw to take away at least a good fraction of the Ridgewood’s current clientele. And the already struggling Ridgewood can’t afford to lose ANY patrons, much less a significant amount.
It doesn’t take much for people to go somewhere else. Like I said, when I lived only three blocks from the Ridgewood Theater in the 80’s and early 90’s, even I treked out of the neighborhood to other “cleaner” theaters.
Yes, that’s another reason I don’t think it’s a good idea to post the photos directly into the message page, as opposed to linking. If you have people posting very large photos directly into the message page, not only will you cause a hardship for dial up users, it will make you have to scroll back and forth just to read the messages if the photo pixels are too large to fit on people’s computer’s screen.
Again, this is why although I discovered you could post photos directly into message sections about two or three years ago (by testing it in preview), I never made it public that it’s possible, as unless the photos are less than 700X or 800X, it will cause problems on the pages, especially if people aren’t familiar with what they are doing.
I still think it’s better to link to photos as we have been doing.
Yes, this appears to be a publicity thing to get people through the doors. I think the Ridgewood Theater’s days are numbered unless the current management does something.
Yes, thankfully it is open, but unfortunately I fear not for long unless the management does something other than the status quo once Atlas opens. And as it stands, an evening schedule only is still not a good sign as to the health of the theater, ,however, still better than the alternative.
Warren, yes, you can post images directly into your posts, however, it may not be a good idea, as the pages will take longer and longer to load if too many photos are added to the message section, so I never did it. I discovered that the USB codes for images worked on Cinematreasures in the preview, but never did it for the above reason. That’s why it’s perhaps better to just link as most have been doing, but I don’t know other people’s opinion on this.
The captions on Ken’s photo say it has been gutted. Has it been gutted further than Warren’s 1994 photo shows? As while it isn’t in the greatest of shape, it doesn’t appear “gutted” in that photo, aside from the floor flattened, and seats ripped out. Did they gut it further since 1994?
It wouldn’t do any good, as they would have to be retaken. I don’t know how often satelite images are taken, or photos such as those “Bird’s Eye” photos are taken. It’s not “Google” that take the photos I don’t think, I think they buy the rights to them, and they use the most current available to them. Which in some areas may have been taken last month, but other areas 3 years ago, and others still perhaps 5 or more years ago!
Lost, I also have noticed that those satelite images are a little old on Google. It’s like you can read my mind, I also mapped my home about a week or two ago, and the Google Earth image I would date to about 4 years ago also, going by the houses built near by, or other conditions. I can take it one step further though! While the “Bird’s Eye” photos on local.live of NYC I date to about 2003 (going by the RKO Bushwick reconstruction going on in one view, and various buildings missing or under construction. However, their satelite views are even older than Google Earth! There’s a home about a block away from my home that was built about 7 years ago (yes, it was around 1998 or 1999 that it was built, and that lot is still wooded land yet in the image! So that would have to date the local.live satelite image to some time pre-1999!!!
Thanks Ron. Thanks for the original name. I attended a couple concerts in the Hammerstein Ballroom. I don’t think that theater can be listed on this site, as if I’m not mistaken, it never showed cinema.
I remember the ceiling still having murals when i attended the concerts. I think the procenium, arch has been removed, and if it had Juliette balconies, I think they are gone too, but yes, there is some ornamentation restored.
All the seats are of course ripped out, and the place is just general admission (similar to how the Astor Plaza had all the seating ripped out (Nokia Theater) is now too as a concert hall.
Wow, I didn’t realize the theater closed in the 60’s already. No wonder it looked so much like a diamond in the rough by the 1980’s. That even makes it more unbelievable that so many of the historic features are still so intact in that theater, and it’s been close to 40 years that it’s been closed as a “theater”. I mean, the ceiling was even still in original paint, at least into the early 90’s! Time really has been kind to the theater – at least considering it’s been 40 years since it’s been used as a theater, and if it did close around 1967, it was a for about 40 years. It’s rapidly approaching the point where it will have been a BINGO hall longer than it was a theater….
As for Jahn’s opening just before the RKO Keith’s, they may have opened in anticipation of the Theater opening, as it was probably either under construction or in the planning stages when Jahn’s opened.
Lost Memory and I have figured this building was demolished, and replaced with a large, one story building at some point, which can be seen at the corner of 113th St and jamaica Ave, seen at the bottom of this image:
Yeah, it could be that building to the left of the tarp too. If that other building does have steps, I doubt they would have put steps on a theater, but you never know.
Age old controversy…..Interesting how RKO promoted the RKO Madison (in the same ad) as being in Brooklyn, when it is, and always was in Queens!!
Actually, most of them are “new” movies, but again, the short time it’s open is discouraging.

Bob, the Chopin still stands. It’s a Burger King in the lobby area, but the building is still there:

Cypress probably walked by early. Weekdays I believe they still only have an evening schedule.
Peter, I too ran through those Ridgewood sprinklers. And speaking of Carvels…..what about the one that was directly next to the RKO Madison Theater!

Here’s some more photos I found of the interior of the Shore, probably taken the same time as Mark’s.

Wow, what a nice classic marquee the Forest Hills had!
So what is the Liberty’s auditorium being used for now, the hotel catering hall?
Any photos?
What exactly is the Liberty Theater part of the complex used for today?

The last time I was there, you could park easily along the railroad tracks next to the RKO Theater, but I don’t know if that’s always the case.
