of the two laser installs, this is going to be the longest, with a stated ‘March 2016’ reopening time frame. As it’s the oldest IMAX screen of the Smithsonian’s the conversion will be more complex than Udvar Hazy’s.

It’s always been ETX – but changing over to a ‘Prime’ theater was quietly murmured to me (which is completely different: mainly laser projection, different seats) – that conversion may or might not happen at a future date, but it didn’t in the time frame mentioned to me – because for a largely sold out show last night, AMC might think otherwise in reducing the seat number in it’s second largest auditorium at this location.

^ well that didn’t happen (thankfully)

just saw ‘The Revenant’ – didn’t know it was on the ETX screen here. Visually and aurally it was amazing, from the music to the overall sound design – this was a top notch Atmos mix and stunning presentation.

oh sorry Coate – I remember seeing ‘Quest for Fire’, was very impressionable for a young age.

I had no idea that ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ was here, since I distinctly remember seeing it over at 4000 Wisconsin Ave.

I remember the ads for ‘The Last Emperor’ – it played at Jenifer? The Post ads definitely were touting 70mm at the Uptown for that release.

I saw ‘Hateful Eight’ here yesterday midday and I thought the presentation was outstanding – typical for AFI Silver in my opinion ~wow!~

Morricone’s score at times was so powerful and suitably loud.

my only gripe is that Tarantino should have had some entre' act music at the beginning of the second part of the movie – it abruptly jumps back into the movie without much of a breather.

as a teen in the late 80’s I started to keep the Movie Section of the Weekend part of the Post – they unfortunately got chucked… [sad face] So how would I research this? got any tips – I know that the Martin Luther King Jr. branch of the DC library used to keep the Post on microfilm – do they still do that?

I haven’t yet Jodar – I’m eyeing seeing ‘The Force Awakens’ this coming Saturday here

I was under the impression that the aspect ratio “1.43 : 1 (some scenes: IMAX 70mm)” [as indicated on IMDB] meant full screen – right?

“IMAX 70mm” also pertains to the IMAX-laser systems that are projected on 4:3 screens.

from the Smithsonian’s Facebook page:

“Last chance to experience 15/70mm film at the Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater!

‪#‎TheForceAwakens‬ will be our final show in film on January 10th. On January 11th we close our doors to upgrade our facility to the state-of-the-art IMAX with Laser digital projection system!"

sign of the times…

also IMAX-laser has no ghosting unlike IMAX 15/70 which is sporadic but does happen time to time.

^ I’m just curious in knowing what disappointments you’ve noted are?

I got word from Arclight – that they fixed the image in filling the entire curved screen. For some reason this has never been corrected at Washington DC’s Uptown theater screen which displays this very odd fish-eye anomaly at the bowed corners – never a problem with the 70mm/35mm projector, but once digital came around … eck!

Giles
Giles commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Dec 18, 2015 at 8:33 am

that extra 21 feet was supposed to be for ‘Hateful 8’ [sarcasm face]

Giles
Giles commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Dec 18, 2015 at 7:40 am

does the new projector properly fill the whole screen – curve and all?

Giles
Giles commented about Uptown Theatre on Dec 18, 2015 at 7:37 am

I highly doubt that AMC is going to pony up for a laser system – it could use it (in my opinion) but the theater was listed as one of the top three places to see the new Star Wars movie as mentioned in today’s Washington Post’s Weekend section.

mentioned in today’s Washington Post’s Weekend section as one of the top three places to see (“experience”) the new Star Wars movie – I agree!

the screens drops down vertically to facilitate the wider image (noted when I saw ‘Khartoum’ at the prior 70mm mini-fest) – it sadly doesn’t expand horizontally as the Uptown masking does – now that screen when I saw a reissue of ‘Ben-Hur’ was jaw dropping.

Giles commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Dec 17, 2015 at 10:30 am

oh you’re welcome Flix70. ‘Django’ is almost but not quite three hours, two hours and 45 minutes to exact

Jamie was in last year’s “Annie” (and “Dreamgirls” oh and “The Amazing Spider-Man”)– where have you been?

it’s on my bucklist to see a 70mm feature here.

question: does the screen for 2.76 features expand horizontally?

Giles commented about Lincoln Plaza Cinemas on Dec 17, 2015 at 10:16 am

has this been changed over to digial projection or do some of the auditoriums still project 35mm? I only ask since Sony Classic’s is releasing the critically acclaimed ‘Son of Saul’ as such (which opens in limited release tomorrow).

silver – there are at least three online stories (National SunTimes, Variety, Slash) regarding the news that Arclight installed the dual-head Christie 6P laser system on the Dome – but it’s odd that Arclight didn’t release an official press release story regarding this – maybe they have, but I’m not having luck finding anything online reporting this.

Flix70: $162,805,434 domestically to be exact. $30,122,888 (opening weekend). Mid January was the release of the movie internationally. It also had the big name draw of Leonardo DeCaprio and Jamie Foxx

and yet ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ comes out first … wah-wah cry me a river Tarantino. It’s down to the buck and what brings in the masses (a three-hour western?), regardless of who’s the director.

Giles
Giles commented about AFI Silver Theatre on Dec 16, 2015 at 10:09 am

I’m going to support the AFI, but when comparing the pricing of a ticket at Regal Gallery Place it’s $15 matinee / $17 night time.

Giles
Giles commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Dec 16, 2015 at 8:50 am

now I hope they can install a laser system over at Arclight’s Bethesda theater – they are having difficulties with the 3D system on it’s “widescreen” screen. [damn it!]

Giles
Giles commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Dec 15, 2015 at 12:39 pm

audio is completely different though – depending on how it’s mixed: 70mm could be 5.1 (split surround) 3.2 (1) (baby boom / mono surround) 5.0 (1) (five front – mono surround). IMAX-laser can accommodate up to 12 channels of sound (four speakers in the ceiling).

Seeing a demo of IMAX-laser with 15/70 shot footage (‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’) though really was eye striking – inky black levels, highly detailed sharpness

Giles
Giles commented about AFI Silver Theatre on Dec 15, 2015 at 12:28 pm

did you see the tix price for ‘The Hateful Eight’ for all screenings – $20 (!!) “whoah”

Giles
Giles commented about AMC Shirlington 7 on Dec 11, 2015 at 7:29 am

AMC could have rejigged the audio to 7.1 – but I’m sure they didn’t.
