A 1973 ad shows 710 S. Alvarado as being the Park Theatre? The double bill was “The Don is Dead” and “Terminal Island”.

I have an ad from 1973 showing another Park Theatre on 710 South Alvarado?

I remember well when Sunrise Cinemas first opened in Valley Stream and the whole city seemed to be flocking there. I guess it was the curiosity of seeing a 6-plex. Back then we still had so many nice theatres with curtains and plush seats, and let’s face it National Amusement Theatres were cinder block walls with seats and a screen. The Century Theatres then were so much nicer.

Actually my aunts mother lived a few blocks away and we went there to visit her and she way saying she was dying to see this film, so my uncle took all of us. I found out Barbra worked there a few years later.

In December of 1973 they were showing the X rated cartoon “Heavy Traffic”.

As late as Decmber 1973 this was still part of Cinema 5 (re-named Rugoff Theatres). They were playing “What’s Up Doc” and “Get to Know Your Rabbit”.

The one and only movie I saw at Loew’s King was “The Way We Were”. I just found the ad, it was playing on Columbia Premiere Showcase and along with the Kings in Brooklyn was at the Dyker and Georgetown 1. The ad was dated December 9, 1973.

I’m sure nobody will miss that moronic Captain Blood name.

Jan 3, 1967 Warner Brothers released “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” on a large neighborhood run. It was mostly RKO houses. In April after it had won the 5 Academy Awards it was re-released to almost the same run of theatres but paired up with “The Oscar” Tony Bennetts one big starring role.

This theatre did huge grosses in the early days of gay porn. Looking back now on those ads from the late 60’s into the 70’s they seem like Hollywood releases. I guess the film makers may have been trying to have those not in the know not be offended while still appealing to the target audience.

RobertR commented about Palace Theatre on Jun 10, 2005 at 8:09 pm

The Palace went back and forth many times in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s between live theatre and film. By the late 70’s it was only live theatre.

In June of 1969 Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” opened here while still playing the Paris in Manhattan. It played here for many months to packed houses.

I found an ad from May 1972 and the there is a theatre listed called The Little Cinema in Wayne. It is showing an adult feature (the ads then were so classy, it looks like a regular movie). Was this the Jerry Lewis before it became the Valleyview?

In May of 1969 the Laurel had the exclusive Nassau County showing of Catherine Deneuve in “Belle de Jour”. This was an unusual area to play an exclusive like this. Maybe this was a subsequent release.

Want to hear a strange double bill? In May of 1969 Fox sent out “Planet of the Apes” and “Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines” as a double-bill. The catch phrase was “Perfect Mates Apes and Men”. It played here at the Academy along with the UA Riviera.

RobertR commented about Hollis Cinema on Jun 10, 2005 at 7:12 pm

In 1962 this was being billed as The Hollis Repetory Cinema. They were playing a double bill of “Public Enemy” and “A Nous La Liberte” both from 1931. The next day they were playing Sophia Loren in “Aida”. I found this amusing since a year ago I made postings on the Guild 50th site about this “lost” film which was revived in the 80’s there. Even more amusing is Hollis having an art house, if you saw this area now.

So this actually lasted longer then the Parthanon which I think closed in 1960.
