The theatre across the way was built by Loews. Showcase Cinemas had been planning to build a theatre in the Danbury area. The two companies made a deal. In exchange for letting Loews have the Danbury area to themselves Showcase gained the theatre that Loews was building in Fairfield.
Do we know for sure if the Salvation Army building incorporates the old theatre? I was there yesterday and could not tell if it may be a completely new building.
Despite what was claimed in any article, the Islamic Center building was not the State Theatre. It was, indeed, the building next to the State Theatre shown in the old photo. The Islamic Center’s address is 14 W 7th. The new building after the vacant lot if 26 W 7th. Therefore 20-24 W 7th is the vacant lot which is where the State used to be.
This theatre hosted movies at least through 2014. You can see the 2013 Google street view when it was showing the movie “The Heat”. It is now a live music theatre known as the Deloraine Winchester Theatre.
