You catch a glimpse of the Rivoli marquee and the giant vericle sign spelling out “Gone with Wind” in the soft porn film, “Fuego”, probably filmed in 1967. Although the film was shot in Argentina, a few minutes was actually filmed in Times Square. On the DVD you freeze frame it for a good look.
I have a number of exterior shots of the National Twin. Titles on the marquee: Buffy: the Vampire Slayer; Unlawful Entry; Twins; Home Alone. What is your e-mail address?
The Sleazoid Express book describes a frightening acount of watching movies at the Anco, including “bodily fluids” on the floor! I remember a “UA Premiere” showcase engagement at the Anco for the double bill of “Guns of the Magnificent Seven” and “Death Rides a Horse”, in 1969. The Anco was actually listed in ad for this booking in the NY Times. Are there any photos of the Anco 42nd St.?
VALLEY OF THE DOLLS played at the Criterion in 1967. The Palace reopened as a movie Theatre in 1969 with a double bill of A STRANGER IN TOWN and THE STRANGER RETURNS. Soon after, BEN-HUR roadshowed here in 1969.
The last big event at the Grand was the world premiere of FAIR GAME with the film’s star, Cindy Crawford, and her family, in attendance. I covered it “live” on WEZY and WRJN radio. Greg Marcus, who owned the radio stations at that time, also owned the theatre.
I have been in the New Embassy Theatre as a visitor’s Information Center. They have the entire history in plaques on the wall. The theatre looks tiny! You can see the screen and seating areas. “2001: A Space Odyssey” played here direct from the Cinerama Theatre. It must have been a terrible viewing experience. Other films playing here in the late 1960s…“Targets”; “All the Loving Couples” (X rated); “Sweden: Heaven and Hell” (X rated); “Secret Ceremony”; … I’ll think of others.
Is this the Variety Arts Theatre? If so, I believe the sequel to “Annie”, orginally to open on Broadway as “Annie 2”, was pulled and re-worked with another “Annie” title and played at this theatre.
Vito…I remember how perfectly the curtins were timed with the movie ending. Now, it’s a white screen with ads from a slide projector before and after the movie. Whatever happened to showmanship?

With regard to that great list of movies (several posts back) that played at the Loew’s State 1 & 2, a double bill of Bullit & Bonnie and Clyde played at the Loew’s State 2 in 1969.
I have an exterior photo of the Harris (circa 1991). I’ll e-mail it to someone if they want to post it.
I have a photo of the Embassy 2-3-4 with marquee loaded with titles and lit up. I’ll e-mail it to someone if they want to post it.
I have a photo of Movieland days before demolition. I’ll e-mail it to someone if they want to post it.
I have a photo of the National Twin exterior. If some wants to post it, I’ll e-mail it to you.
The Merv Griffin Show was taped at the Cort Theatre.
As The Warner, Cineplex Odeon tried to relive the glory days when they brought in “Lawrence of Arabia” to the renamed Rialto.
Was the Rialto West the 600 seat Rialto and the Rialto II the basement 300 seater?
I remember the Massapequa Jerry Lewis Twin. It was on the site of the Massapequa Drive-in and White’s Dept Store. I believe it became a liquor store.
Did any Jerry Lewis Cinemas survive? I have a Variety ad pitching the Jerry Lewis Cinemas as a mom & pop turn-key operation.
Is this on the site of the original Kips Bay Theatre I remember from the 50s & 60s?

Yes. Ben-Hur ran on two shows a day for a few months at the Palace during a re-release, followed by the roadshow of GOODBYE MR. CHIPS.

The fate of this theatre, as well as the Regency Mall Cinema, is in question when Marcus builds it’s new 16 plex, down the road, in Sturtevant.

The last movie shown…the forgettable “Milk Money”.

If this theatre goes bye-bye, where will those flashy premieres be held?
NOTE to Moviefone…you can remove the Sutton 1 & 2 from your listings.
I remember that just about every marquee in the late 60s had “save free tv” on it.
I have quite a few photos of the National. If I can figure how to post ‘em, I will.
