I have been informed by a friend in San Juan that the Regency building, the headquarters of Caribbean Cinemas, is still standing. They demolished the building next door to use as a parking lot for their employees.
Cineast: Re your 12/29/06 comment, the Rex was not close to the Regency and the Cortes was far away near Calle Cerra. The Regency was farther than the Cinerama towards Hato Rey. It was not surrounded by other theaters.
The former Regency became the corporate office of Caribbean Cinemas. Unless the office has been moved it is doubtful it was demolished. Can anyone in San juan confirm if it has been demolished?
Bill, many stars in many pictures were listed at the end with the “and” before their name. It’s called French Billing and it means a star in a smaller but important role. On TV they use Guest Star.
If I remember correctly, in the 60s Rio Piedras had the Paradise (Cobian), Modelo (a Llamas theater) and Cobian’s New Victoria, the remodeled old Victoria which the interior was decorated as the newly remodeled Puerto Rico in Santurce nd played day-and-date with Santurce theaters. I don’t remember any other theaters in Rio Piedras. I don’t know what to tell you. If they destroyed the Paramount, except for the facade, then they can do the same with the Paradise. I really don’t know what to tell you. Sorry. Have a good night, Davsot.
It was a long narrow theater. I went a lot when I was at UPR and lived at the Darlington. Saw it in January and looks as awful as in the Jan. 19 pics. Well, they were taken a few days after I passed by the theater. What a shame!
I heard some time ago the municipal government took the Ideal over to turn it into a performing arts center, but nothing has happened. I have not been in Yauco in about 3 years. I have a snapshot of the grandparents house taken from the church tower. Since there are 3 houses in the photo, someone put a white arrow on the roof. I believe the houses on each side are still standing but are shops or something. I blew up the snapshot but it does not look good. Still, I have it framed in my apartment.
I was born in Yauco and raised in San Juan. I used to go every summer to Yauco and stayed in my late grandparents house across the plaza in front of the Ideal. They only had matinees on weekends and the evening show was at 7PM. About 10 minutes or so before the program started they rang a bell, continuously, until the program began. During the day I used to skate in the open lobby. Eventually it was enclosed. Incidentally, the family house does not exists anymore. A relative bought it, demolished it, and built one of the ugliest 2 or 3 story apartment houses ever built. Yet, the beautiful house to the right of the Ideal was owned by my late godfather who remodeled it. The present owners maintain it in excellent condition (at least until 3 or 4 years ago).
Fred Fajardo: House of of Wax was a Warner Bros. film, it could have not played at the Metro. At the time, the Mtero was owned by MGM and only played MGM movies. Later they obtained the distribution rights in PR for Buena Vista (Disney) and either played them at the Metro or booked them in another theater,m
Was this a Llamas theater originally called Teatro F in Fernandez Juncos before Stop 15 right on the outskirts of Miramar? I think before or after being the Cinema 70 it was turn into a TV studio where the late Luis Vigoreaux did his shows. As Cinema 70 it was run by the owners of Rex Cinema if I remember correctly.
In pic of Sep. 7 above the theater looks different because of the marquee. I guess the new marquee was added when the theater was twinned. Glad is still operating.

Thanks Davsot for putting the pic on this site. Let’s hope someone will come up with some information about this theater.
PS: Love your Flicker Photostream, Davsot.

Renewing link.
The screen was too big and too close to the front rows of the orchestra for a small theater.
I always sat in the balcony, front and center.
Isn’t it a church now?

I just tried the link and it works.

Sorry Davsot, but I already had moved to NYC when Cinearte opened. I never knew it existed until I saw it listed here. I don’t know anything either.
The above pic, Dec. 31, is not the Cinearte. It is the Fine Arts in Miramar.
