I think things would have just blown over if our city manager hadn’t made such a big deal out of it. I think he was just mad because he felt left out. He liked to think of himself as our “Dad”. Haha

I know many theatre couples dated. A few got married. Don’t really see why he would care.We never had policy at ABC PLITT about dating.
GCC had one , but didn’t stop the guys and gals from going out. really, hard to enforce it unless they can’t control themselves at work. I don’t think I would have lasted a week with Anderson.

I guess I have to tell you at least some of the story now. I didn’t get too big for my britches…I got married! LOL Only a very few people knew we were even dating. Mr. A was not there much, so he didn’t have a clue. Finally, a couple of weeks before the wedding we sent out invitations. Well, our projectionist was so happy for us he hung the invitation on the bulletin board. The wrong person happened to look at that bulletin board. hahaha Talk about somebody being MAD! He pitched a fit.

I never understood suspended. I missed an employee meeting Tinney had set up.I had only been to 30 of them. Still, i should have there. But,it goes back to being too big for your britches. I know he really didnot want to fire me.I know he didn’t because of all the managers under him he knew i would trek down to the Imperial when noone else would.

I know what you mean…Dick never had the guts to fire me — I was suspended— nobody really knew what that meant :) (Funny story) anyway, I was getting ready to make a scrapbook with my pictures, but I guess I’ll just leave them out so we can make copies easier.

Even with my pretty good memory,it took awhile, but Tinney fired me in Nov. 1980. that night i drove up to NATIONAL HILLS guess in a state of shock, but sometimes it does one good to be brought down to earth if one is only an Assistant Mgr,at a twin theate.

GREAT,You can count on ME wanting pictures{COPIES} The picture you took from the IMPERIAL was the marquee “EYEWITNESS” and “DEATH HUNT”. I hope you can find them. I will bring my album. Bill has hundreds.
Another great thing about this is that you will get to know other theatre people and really enjoy discussing working there. I am talking with theatre people from Nashville to Hawaii. tisloews is one guy iam always talking the old days about. He worked for Loews but loves my stories,as i do his.

I couldn’t forget Columbia 1 & 2! I worked there a few times filling in or doing kids shows in the mornings. I think I remember we had a Christmas party or 2 there. I never really stopped to think about how many theatres I have worked at til now — it’s a bunch!

Another summer booking of a 1963 hit “Jason and the Argonauts”. I enjoy the special effects and the movie does okay business.

It is June 12 1979 we are playing FOR OUR BIG SUMMER movies the Re-release of “JAWS” and a Benji rip-off called “C.H.O.M.P.S. and we are running 4 shows of "JAWS” and 5 showings of “CHOMPS”.Our sister theatres NATIONAL HILLS and IMPERIAL are showing only at night 8;00 and 10:00 pm. Never started these 10:00 shows much here until GCC moved in.
Coming soon the IN-LAWS and another re-run, “STAR WARS” so i was right I knew i would find the proof that “STAR WARS” played here even if it was Third or fourth run. CAN WE SQUEZZE ANOTHER DIME OUT OF IT ?

Well, we got the news. The Big movie event of 1979 is going to play in COLUMBIA 1. “HURRICANE” with Mia Farrow opens and man, this was “HEAVEN’S GATE,before "HEAVEN’S GATE” a complete bomb. I am not too sure if it even played second run here in Augusta.
I know by the end of the run we were playing to empty houses. I was so sure no one was coming i even shampooed the carpets in that theatre.

I came in one afternoon to see if any of the managers wanted to eat lunch. They were having their weekly meeting with Mr.Tinney. Jack Jordan.Manager of the Imperial holds a black and white 8 by 10 still and sees me.“Mike,I know if anyone knows this cowboy’s name it is you."
I look at it for less than 2 seconds and said,"Neville Brand.”

Can’t make this up.

For the record,Karen was not the VALENTINO waitress mentioned above. Karen was sweeter.

Mike Rogers
Mike Rogers on January 5, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Sometimes I would pick Karen up from work at Sondy’s pizza and just go back to the theatre after hours and spend time together sitting in the office or up in the booth watching Mr.Adams color TV. Those were the days. She even talked me into going to the HILLTOP drive in to see STAR WARS a movie i could have cared less about. I don’t think we watched much of the movie.

Mike Rogers on January 2, 2010 at 10:10 pm

I remember often a couple of times i would get to know a waitress at Sondy’s Pizza next to COLUMBIA 1 and 2 and after the movie we would sit on the floor by the back exit doors sip a few cold ones and talk. I remember one girl all she wanted to talk about was the new VALENTINO movie,THAT we weren’t playing! Maybe, just maybe I would have gotten lucky that night had we been playing that 1977 dog of a movie.

I was really surprized how well Richard Pryor did here in Martinez,Georgia.TO be honest We might have played Silver Streak second run with Pryor, but he doesn’t show up until well into the movie. I guess some of the folks from downtown drove up. It would have kicked butt Downtown.
