This has been renamed Five Star cinemas in 2012 (no relation with the Russian chain that just opened in Glendale,CA). It is now owned by Your Neighborhood Theatres.

March 27th, 1948 grand opening ad uploaded in the photo section. Listings stopped in 1973. Also uploaded the Tremont ad from May 28th, 1916 and the contest ad from 1927. It opened as State on August 29th, 1927.

I regret that I have not been able to find any information on the opening of either the AMC Joplin 6 or the Northstar 14 theatres. We have extensive files concerning the historic theatres of Joplin, but none on these more recent theatres. I did some internet research and combed through our newspaper databases as well and again, came up with nothing. I can say anecdotally that Northstar 14 opened for the holiday season in either 1998 or 1999 because I worked there at the time of the opening. I’m fairly certain it was 1999 but I can’t remember if I was 16 or 17, hence the hesitation. I did find a Joplin Globe article from May 2008 discussing the closing of Cinema 6, but could not find information in regards to the opening.

Omaha World-Herald (NE) November 7, 1996 “Douglas Theater Co. will open its 20 – screen 20 Grand next week at 144th Street and West Maple Road. AMC will open its 24 – screen, yet – unnamed theater late next summer several miles to the south, near 144th Street and West Center Road. Together, the two multiplex theaters will hold about 9,100 people”

“Nineteen of the screens will be in conventional auditoriums. One special theater will offer simulated roller coaster, airplane and other motion technology rides.”
