Thanks matt54,the point i was making that address,s do change sometimes what was the correct address 35 to 40 years ago might not even be the same today, that happens.I am well aware of the contributions of many people on this site.
Hello Patsy,no I am not retired,I play music for a living now,I wish I was back in the theatre business but it is just not the same anymore.By the way I only live about 5 minutes from the Melrose Theatre, hope you get to come and see it again.
Of course we had more employees than that I just do not remember their names,Robert Sokol I know died a while back here had worked for Loews many, many, years, asfor Mr. Beard and Miss Crokett if they are still alive would be pretty old as my time there was nearly 35 years ago.
No Patsy when I went bowling there they had machines to reset the pins.I think that you would enjoy seeing the old shopping center, looks very much the same as I can remember, just that were the bowling alley was is a vacant spot now.The bowling alley moved to Anitioch and is still open, and still called Melrose Lanes even though it is nowhere near Melrose.I had much fun working at the theatre and going bowling,or playing pool in the basement or drinking down at one of the storefront bars that was there at one time it was a good place to hang out. Thanks for your stories.
Yeah Mike we put chains on all the exit doors, just trying to list some employees at my theatres, another story I just thought of was a regular customer we always called “Concrete” because he always had dust all over him, he was an older black man who smelled bad,he would come to the theatre Monday -Friday every week no matter what movie was on I just came in to sleep,he must have been homeless,or a street person as we called them then.Sometimes I would see people sit near him and after a short time they would get up and move because of his Body Odor,he never came in on Saturday of Sunday though must have had somewhere else to go,he did this for years and he stopped showing up,must have died or moved on never saw him again.I have already listed some other employees on the Melrose and Madison Square sites
Former Employees if anyone cares: John Neal Manager,Mr.Beard who was in his 70,s at the time, was a doorman,a Miss Crokett old time cashier. And myself I worked there 2 days a week for about a year when I was the Relielf Manager, worked at all three Loews houses 2 days a week, till I got promoted to Manager of the Loews Melrose when Robert Sokol out city manager retired, and Joe Daniel took over his job at the Loews Crescent and I took over his job as manager of the Loews Melrose, back where I had started as a doorman in 1973.
Joe Daniel became the manager of this theatre and our Loews City Manager when Robert “Bob” Sokol retired.I left the Crescent and took over Joes job as Manager of the Loews Melrose were I had first started as a doorman in 1973.Other employees of this theatre were Mildred Patton cashier, very good see always came out even on the books.A Mr. Patterson who was over eighty at the time was our daytime doorman and sometimes conncessions guy.Jimmy Davis worked in the booth I went up to the booth to pay him one friday night, when I came in the next day I found out that went home that night and had a fatal heart attack. He always waved at me when he left as I was locking up,he waved at me that Friday night and I never saw him again very sad.We had one cashier named Jan she was O.K. when we were slow but I would have to take over for her when we were really busy as she could not sell tickets fast enough. Our clean up man worked there for years 365 days 7 days a week never missed his name was Kingston Allison.Several doorman I remember were Clint Burris who made Asst.Manager later,Tony Grey who did the same and many others I cannot remember now.
In 1973 I first went to work at this theatre the manager was Joe Daniel he was there for quite a while till our city manager Robert “Bob” Sokol retired,Joe became the Loews city manager and went downtown to the Loews Crescent,I left the Crescent and took over his job as manager of the Loews Melrose, were I had started out.
Harry Vickors was one time manager of this theatre when it was run by Martin Theatres.
