Paul F – in response to your 11/9/06 comment, it’s not an all-Christopher Guest festival, but This is Spinal Tap will be at the Portage on May 5! (It’s actually a rock music film fest, with The Wall and The Song Remains the Same)

The Drive-In opened at 8 p.m. on July 21, 1937. Interestingly, the admission charge was per person, not per carload.

mp775 commented about Loew's Pitkin Theatre on Apr 7, 2008 at 2:41 pm

The interior already has been lost. The ceiling had fallen to the floor, and much of the ornamentation was stripped away by vandals and scavengers over the years. Add to that some workers performing interior demolition back in 2003 or ‘04 — I don’t know the extent of their work, but it’s likely that the interior has already been in a landfill for a few years.

Since signs stating “Another POKO Development” are already posted on the sidewalk bridge, I think the project is going ahead.

Not that I know of, but I haven’t spoken to anyone there since 10/25/07, when the woman at the box office said it was day-to-day. Does Village typically announce closures, or do the employees come into work one day and find the door locked?

“Property owner Henry Zheng now hopes to construct a six-story, mixed-use building on the site, but his plans have been challenged by the city.”

In other words, it will remain a hole in the ground for years to come, like the Marboro in Brooklyn or the Aldelphi and Nortown in Chicago. Way to go.
