Posting what is being booked at the Chinese is part of the recent discussion. Over the past few years it has been neglected as far as quility or even quantity of bookings by Mann. Since this is undisputed the Most Famous Movie theatre in the world and is a treasure there has always been discussion about the topic. I do not think anyone uses it to want 15 minutes or turn it into Facebook, it is part of the general discussion quite often in this string.

I disagree, The Chinese can stay a movie theatre if utilized correctly. They just need to keep films booked so they are not there a eternity. Mann kept The Book of Eli in the main house for 9 weeks, 7 more than it should have. The Cinerama Dome keeps the flow going and never lets the momentum slow down for it.

Great theatre. One of biggest losses in LA county. The AMC 15 is a dump compared to this theatre.

The 1978 photo is when this theatre rocked. GCC had a great theatre back then. I miss those days.

I love the new photos. Quite a few are from when I worked there. Altered States, Firefox.

The photos newly added just want to make me cry. We will never have theatres like this ever again. I love the newly added photos from the early 70’s.

I’m not sure about how far in advance chains book; when I worked at the Village (1980-1983) we knew at Christmas time what we were getting during the Summer months.

It sounds like the new owners are into showing films. There is a slew of great films with potential during the Fall/Christmas period. I would imagine the Chinese will be well feed with good product.

Arclight had Cowboys & Aliens, Attack the Block, Crazy Stupid, The Devil’s Double, Captain America, Friends with Benefits, Another Earth as coming attractions on the showtimes board in the lobby. Plus they have the one sheet posted for Cowboys & Aliens. Unless the booking is falling through they are getting it at Arclight. Not sure what Chinese could get…maybe The Smurfs? Final Destination 5?

There is enough product for both Chinese and Arclight to do well. Mann got lazy, hopefully new owners will continue to show love. I would guess pretty much all the new bookings this Summer were set by Mann before the sale and we will not see booking changes until this Fall/Winter.
I’m not taking sides…I’m glad both theatres exist and will support both.

I was at Arclight yesterday, they are getting Cowboys & Aliens. Pretty much every big film within the next 3 weeks they are getting. But from the sound of it, the Chinese can get by with Harry Potter for the bulk of the Summer.

Honestly, I think the last time I went to the UA Marina was in 1983 with a few friends to see The Big Chill in the largest screen. It is surprising it has stayed open this long considering how terrible the theatres are. In the 70’s I thought they were bad, cannot image how they are now.

I went to Ameoba records and noticed a couple Billboards on the side of the bldg For Harry Potter at the Chinese. They were advertising Free Popcorn with admission.

Sad that they have to warn people that a film may be too intelligent and a person may actually have to absorb and ponder it.

I have to research where I will see Harry Potter. Since the first film I have been going back and forth between the Village and Grauman’s Chinese. It looks like I will have to go to one of the Chinese 6 theatres to see it, because I refuse to see 3D. Harry Potter does not need it.

BRADE48 commented about Cinerama Hollywood on Jun 29, 2011 at 1:46 pm

The studios just need to stop producing 3D films, It is an awful gimick that has never been good enough to last for long periods of time. Lately it is a ploy to get audiences to see lousy movies that need some kind of hook to entice people. I’m reading that films like Harry Potter, Pirates…, Green Lantern have seen declines with people favoring 2D instead. Pull the plug already!

I think the Chinese can still thrive as a Movie Theatre also. They just need to treat it special and not down grade bookings. There are plenty of big films released every year so both Chinese and Arclight can share the wealth.

X-Men seems to have brought the momentum back, and Harry Potter will continue to draw the public.

I used to spend summers in Del Mar when I was a teenager. Back in 1976 I remember seeing The Bad News Bears and Paper Moon at the Flower Hill. It was a Triplex back then.
