I think the three IMAX screens scheduled for their July openings were screwed by director Christopher Nolan, word is that Nolan wants viewers to be wowed by the clarity and resolution that IMAX 70mm film can deliver, not IMAX ‘digital’ (which would suggest it’s inferior) I would assume Warners wanted ‘The Dark Knight’ to go out 35mm, DLP, IMAX-70mm, and IMAX-Digital – however the latter was scrapped because of Nolan’s request. I don’t know what IMAX has rolled up it’s sleeve in terms of what of suppossed to book on the IMAX digital screens – so far there’s only one movie in August and the next two literally back to back in November.
man, I saw ‘Aliens’ at the crappy Mazza Gallerie theaters when they were on the lower lever – terrible theatre to experience such a great movie. Sadly from the newsprint program I got over the weekend, the cut of ‘Aliens’ is the theatrical cut.
I’ve not seen any literature or news of the resolution for IMAX either – it’s as if they want it to be a secret or something. As of last week, Landmark in Baltimore was supposed to have Hancock in 4K Sony DP but that didn’t happen – sucks. Since all the IMAX DP will be out in the suburbs I’m hoping AMC might upgrade one of it’s Georgetown auditoriums to feature Sony 4K (one could hope).

unfortunately all the Hollywood fare being converted to IMAX dimensions retains the film’s original aspect ratio – so yes you are going to get black bars above and below the image – not utilizing the whole image – I think the last film that was best experienced on the imax screen that used most of it was ‘The Ant Bully’ and ‘Robots’ for that matter where they had OAR’s of 1.85:1 2:35:1 films really don’t seem all that worth it if you ask me. Since this has been mentioned over on the Uptown theatre thread, I’m surprised AMC hasn’t converted that to digital projection, since Disney accomplished it for the DC premier of ‘The Guardsman’ (curve and all) and then promplty took it down after it’s premier [sad face]. They’d be better off installing a 4K Sony LCoS system since the closest is Landmark Inner Harbour Baltimore and is one up from 2K DLP and (supposedly) less than IMAX DLP.

Of the one time I’ve been to the AMC theatre’s in Columbia it was my last – it was by the far the worst filmgoing experience ever, really it was – very very rude teenagers.
also, I thought the point of IMAX going digital was that more studios would jump on the bandwagon, there seems to be considerable amount of time between ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ (if this does get released in IMAX) and Madagascar 2 – September to November and then after Harry Potter : January to the March release of “Monsters vs. Aliens”
Dark Knight is IMAX-3D that’s new news to me – I knew Nolan shot some scenes in actual 70mm/IMAX but 3D – mmmmm, I don’t think that’s the case.
I thought ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ was a REAL-D only release.
I think they timed the November IMAX-D theatre openings just right, because with the very small window between Madagascar and The Half Blood Prince – those IMAX screens can show more screenings per day than the IMAX screens at the museums – Udvar Hazy here in the District area might be screwed, suffice to say.
It was great to see all the films at the recent Silverdocs festival being shown in DLP in all three auditoriums as such. About 2 percent of the films were actual 35mm prints.
“Totally Awesome 80’s Movies Part 2” open next month through the end of August – and I can’t wait to see ALIENS on the big screen – the last time I saw it theatrically was at the lower level theatres at Mazza Gallerie on their small rinky dink screens (long gone btw)

unlilke the crappy print that Paramount sent of ‘Iron Man’ for it’s engagement at the Uptown, ‘Indy 4’ (which I finally saw this evening) looked much better and sounded fantastic. The cigarette burn/reel changes were also not as noticeable as they were on the ‘Iron Man’ print I saw.
anyone planning on seeing the three showings of ‘Ben Hur’? (I can’t my weekend is unfortunately pretty much booked) Would love to hear how the print looked and sounded
Recently saw in the Washington Post that the theatre has switched hands over to being a Regal now. Maybe now we’ll see some of the larger screens there being converted to digital projection.

I know I can’t seem to recall where I read this online, but supposedly the specs for IMAX Digital are 8K
as far as I understand it, the Ziegfeld has a 2K NEC system.
As for the movie my thought was that for only an 82 minute movie there was barely a plot.
