One of the largest auditoriums is to be converted to large-format Cinemark XD by the end of the year. It seems that Cinemark is trying to compete with the IMAX Digital theatres in the area.

The standard length trailer will be released online at apple.com/trailers on Thursday, which will likely include some footage from the extended 16-minute trailer.

According to IMDB, the movie will actually be shown in two different aspect ratios depending on the format. The standard 2D version will be shown in 2.35:1 and 3D will be shown in 1.85:1

Looks like this theatre will not be getting the IMAX Digital conversion. According to AMC’s IMAX page, this theatre is no longer listed under the Coming Soon tab.

Cinemark has installed a DLP system with RealD 3D in auditorium #11. I saw Up 3D in this auditorium, which looked much better than my previous 3D viewings in #18. Like the other large auditoriums in this theater, the sound was good. Auditorium #11 has 483 seats. I have yet to see a 3D film in #7. All three digital auditoriums are currently showing Up 3D.

There is a sign in the box office window notifying patrons about the operator change from Muvico to Cinemark. Another sign tells patrons that the theater will be accepting Muvico passes and gift certificates until May 31 (tomorrow).

This hasn’t been officially confirmed yet but apparently Regal has also signed a deal with Sony.

According to the Sony Digital Cinema site and Fandango, Regal Knoxville Center Stadium 10 currently has 4K in all auditoriums.

The patrons at this theater can be a mixed bag. At a sold out IMAX screening of Watchmen, the patrons were actually quite friendly and well-behaved. They moved to the center to make more room and some even helped save seats if someone had to step out.

On the other hand, at a regular 35 mm screening of Watchmen, a woman in the back of the auditorium laughed loudly during scenes that were not that funny and the woman sitting directly behind me kept talking to herself during the movie. These people were not teenagers/young adults either, they were middle-aged people.

This theater would actually be a good location for an IMAX conversion due to the size of its largest auditoriums, especially compared to the auditorium sizes of current IMAX Digital installs.

AMC theaters with Sony 4K projectors now have RealD 3D installed. At least two screens per theater were retrofitted.

Looks like the 3D system debuted earlier than originally planned as Fandango has Coraline 3D listed until Friday. The theater was not listed in Regal’s press release for Coraline 3D but was listed for the Jonas Brothers 3D Concert.

Showtimes are now listed on Fandango and other ticketing sites. However, the official ticketing site (MovieTickets.com) is still down. So tickets cannot be pre-ordered at the moment. If anyone goes to the theater, please report back on whether it is open.

I was not able to ask any of the theater employees since none were available. However, I believe the theater was closed down for some reason. The outside of the theater in front of the box office was packed with people. The inside looked to be the complete opposite.

Showed up to the theater today and all the patrons were standing outside. Free passes were being given out at the box office. I also saw an usher who was escorting patrons to the exit.

MovieTix86 commented about Digital Projection Not Always Perfect on Dec 2, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Most of the films I have seen in DP have been fine. However, there were a few screenings that were not perfect. When I saw “The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D” this past October, there were flickering and refresh rate issues throughout the screening. Also, the 3D had very little depth compared to the screening I saw last year.

There were several issues during a screening of “Bolt in Disney Digital 3D”. There was a pink hue when the theater snipes were shown at the start of the screening, which prompted the projectionist to stop and replay it. When the snipes were replayed, they still suffered from the problem. Most of the film previews shown afterward were scoped. Only two or three were made to fit the entire screen. The auditorium lights came back up when the movie started. When the lights were switched back off, the pink hue returned for several seconds and then the projector was shut off with sound still running. After about 30 seconds, the projector was turned back on and the rest of the presentation was fine.

The total number of seats in #18 is 285. The seat totals are posted at the entrances to the auditoriums.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that there was sound leakage from “Saw V” in the adjacent auditorium. It was only noticeable during the Screenvision pre-show, not during the movie.

MovieTix86 commented about Cinemark Egyptian 24 and XD on Oct 24, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I saw “The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D” in auditorium #18 today and the 3D presentation was not that great. I also saw the movie last year at AMC Columbia 14 and 3D projection looked a lot better. Although the sound was better than last year’s viewing (especially the surround channels), I did not enjoy the visual experience as much. The 3D didn’t seem to pop off the screen as it did at AMC Columbia last year.

This was also the case when I saw “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D” in the same auditorium earlier this year. I also noticed that an additional charge was not added as it was when I saw “Journey 3D.” This time, I was charged standard matinee pricing ($8) instead of the 3D matinee pricing ($11).

The other digital auditorium (#7) is currently showing “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” in DLP.

MovieTix86 commented about Big-screen giant Imax eyes digital future on Oct 8, 2008 at 1:14 pm

When I saw the movie last weekend, there were a few people who were sitting in the back that walked out before the movie started. I’m guessing they didn’t think it was worth the price. This was before a matinee show, which is $11 for IMAX admission compared to $8 for regular admission.

I also noticed that almost all the people in the auditorium sat close to the front. Sitting in the back doesn’t give you the “big screen” feel that you get with traditional IMAX theaters since you can see the edges of the screen.

Jodar where did you see it? I saw “Eagle Eye” at the AMC Columbia IMAX. Only the speaker system and screen were changed. The seating is exactly the same.
