The screen is / was at the rear so yes the front stalls must have been excavated to some degree. Given its listed status, I am assuming that much of the original design remains in the nightclub, albeit possibly hidden from view. The photo above from 1937 shows a very stylish interior.
An 18 month closure for a thorough refurbishment, including demolition of the 1950’s foyer block, and replacement with a modern larger foyer and bars, together with a lavish restoration of the auditorium and stage was completed in 2006.
There is an interesting planning consent here. The church was granted a “su generis” consent which means that it applies only to the current users. If the building is ever sold again it has to be sold as a theatre / cinema, and the church are not allowed to make any changes to the building which could prevent or make difficult a return to entertainment use.

Some photos of the Athena – exterior, foyer and auditorium – taken in March 2009 can be found here. After 6 years of dereliction, it is amazing that the building has been saved and looks so good now!
The council owned complex is currently (early 2009) under the threat of closure in a cost-cutting exercise. There is no other cinema within the town. The building is very well maintained and also contains the Martineau Hall, plus the usual bars and catering facilities.
