The King Alfred Hall within the Guildhall complex is a multi-purpose conference and arts facility which in the 1930’s and 1940’s was often used for cinema exhibition. It is now a conference and live venue with no public cinema usage.
The building was commenced in 1871, opened in May 1873, and apart from an attractive suspended plaster ceiling in the KA Hall is much as built. A Hastings firm of architects, Messrs Jeffrey and Skiller designed the building. It has a flat stalls floor with moveable seats and a single balcony with side slips containing fixed tip-up seating. It now accommodates 625 (seated) but used to hold 800.
The stage measures in excess of 7 mtrs square and there are 5 dressing rooms for up to 100 performers. The proscenium arch is rectangular. Rear projection was used, and still could be if required.
The Guildhall complex was renovated in 1985.
