It’s so nice to see a film on a BIG screen again, as well as to sit in the balcony.
We can only wish that all of the people who have old theaters that still exist in their towns and neighborhood business district which are currently sitting vacant can experience a similar renaissance.
The blue neon on the marquee has been repaired, and tonight is OPENING NIGHT!
(Although I have seen “Dreamgirls” already, for $3.00 I certainly will see it again. And I haven’t yet caught “Night at the Museum.”
I hope to meet some of my fellow bloggers to this site there.
WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR DORMONT! The owners of the used book store and the Dor-Stop Restaurant have told me they are planning to stay open longer to benefit from some of the theater crowds.
Now we can all work to save the South Hills/Cinema 4, as suggested by “thespian110” above.
The marquee now reads: “OPENING MARCH 30."
The first attraction most likely will be "Dreamgirls,” as that is the poster that currently fills the two poster cases.
A brand new poster case with a “Coming Soon” sign near the bottom was installed on the outside yesterday, replacing the old one that had been damaged by vandals. Hopefully they will put up one or two more that announce “Now Playing.”

The construction is still progressing. The front of the theater has been repainted and the front doors and the side exit doors on the front have been sanded and varnished. There is now a new wall at the back of the enlarged lobby/concession area, so I can’t see into the auditorium through the glass in the front doors any more. It probably will be March or April before it is finished. Interested patrons can have a seat plaque with their name for $150.00 – see the flyer in the window of Fredo’s Deli/Coffee Shop next door for details.
Films which played at the Indiana Theater from October 1, 1961 through December 31, 1975. The Indiana went from being an elite Cinerama road-show house to showing almost every blaxploitation and kung fu movie that came out, with a few soft-core sexploitation flicks as well. Sad. At least it is still with us.

Unfortunately, these are all the notes I have in my research for Erie, PA. Perhaps if I can get to a library again that has old Erie newspapers on microfilm, I will be able to get the rest of the film openings in the 1960s.
I remember walking on the street past the Warner in the summer of 1960 and making my parents stop so that I could look at the posters. The theater was showing Walt Disney’s “Pollyanna” and the next attraction was “Bells are Ringing.”

For the most part, Loew’s State was the downtown Houston first-run theater for releases from MGM, UA, and Universal, with an occasional offering from Embassy.
This week a new wall for the back of the auditorium has been erected inside. The old wall between the lobby and the theater area itself was torn down, and with the new wall, the lobby is approximately twice as large as it was. That’s all I can see by looking through the one window pane in the front doors.
The theater is still being remodeled. The original article in the paper says it would be completed by the holidays, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. The construction is moving at a slow pace, but I do see workmen in and out on a regular basis.
(I live across the street and down one block and will keep this website informed of changes.)
The South Hills closed in 2001. The last films to play there were “Along Came a Spider,” “Blow,” and Crocodile Dundee in LA.“ All three titles remained on the marquee for years.
The borough of Dormont refused to renew the building’s operating permit because the roof leaked and the ceiling plaster inside was getting soaked.
Norelco, I am curious…I worked there in 1976 for owners James Baker and Robert Stone with a guy named John. Do you know the last name of the projectionist you mentioned above?
Baker passed away and the theater was bought by a guy named Michael Cardone, who left Cinemette to start his own chain of neighborhood houses, including the South Hills, Bethel Cinemas, and I believe the Mount Oliver and Plaza in Bloomfield. Cardone later made 4 auditoriums out of the South Hills and changed the name to Cinema 4. They were very uncomfortable and badly done. The last movies I saw there were “The Horse Whisperer” and “There’s Something About Mary.”
Right now a Washington, PA outfit owned by Jack Piatt called Millcraft is renovating the former Lazarus Department Store into Piatt Place with condominiums and shops. They currently have the inside track to developing more of the Fifth Avenue and Wood Street areas that have become such a blight. They have expressed an interest in acquring the Warner property and making it into an entertainment center with a multiplex cinema, music clubs, and other things. We can only hope that this comes into being. All this, of course, was discussed under the rule of the late mayor Bob O'Connor. Now it is up to Luke Ravenstahl to continue the downtown redevelopment.

02/02/72 DARK
Yes, it is great. I went twice over the weekend.
It’s so nice to see a film on a BIG screen again, as well as to sit in the balcony.
We can only wish that all of the people who have old theaters that still exist in their towns and neighborhood business district which are currently sitting vacant can experience a similar renaissance.
Was there a theater in East Palestine? If so, what was the name of it?
Posters for the opening attraction have been put in the new cases. It is “Dreamgirls.” Rumor has it that the theater will open on Friday, March 23.
A brand new poster case with a “Coming Soon” sign near the bottom was installed on the outside yesterday, replacing the old one that had been damaged by vandals. Hopefully they will put up one or two more that announce “Now Playing.”
Wasn’t the Orpheum renamed the RKO International 70 around 1964? Or was that another theater in Denver?
