I have always meant to get back to the Kent. Haven’t been in years. It’s a short bus ride from my neighborhood. The Ridgewood didn’t look all that bad when I went last year. Last Saturday I rode my bike past Kings Highway & E. 7th St. The semi-porn “Cinema” is STILL open !!! Anyway, fellas, it’s too tiring to scroll down, so when you guys set a date to get together at the Ridgewood, e-mail me at .gov
Hope we can get together ! PS – No theaters left in Coney Island; just the vertical “SHORE” sign across from Nathan’s.
Hi, PKoch ! Are you guys really getting together at the Ridgewood ? Hope I didn’t miss it ! Yes, I’m still “frankie”, not any other pseudonym, just myself ! Ashamed to say I haven’t been back to the Ridgewood since that last time a year ago. If you guys are goin', give the details here !
Who’s gonna come to that neighborhood ? Haven’t been there in years. It used to be great. What’s it like now ? What kind of people live there ? Do they even go to the movies ??? It’s a long time since I saw “The Legend of Lylah Clare” at the Kings !
Finally took my sister from London to see this theater. We came to the well-attended “Sunset Boulevard” screening. Except for a few jumps in the print in one scene, it was s thrilling experience. We got the goose-flesh when Norma says: “…and all those wonderful people out there in the dark !!!” Best-kept secret: the scruffy bar next door has a nice little inexpensive Italian restaurant downstairs, but it shuts down at 7 PM (???) They haad a nice crowd before the film. By all means, check them out: Parmigiana House 201-792-9565. LONG LIVE LOEW’S !!!
Hi, fellas ! Happy New Year ! The Alpine in Bay Ridge has been sold to an owner who will not only fix it up, but also offer one of its spaces to local performing arts groups. Perhaps he should buy the Ridgewood ! warren, get ready, I’m going off topic, so brace yourself. Best line in “Son of Frankenstein”: Igor’s “They die—-DEAD ! I die—-LIVE !!!” (With hand gestures !) Bela’s best film: “The Raven”. His scene with Boris talking to him through the ceiling grill is my Bela’s cinematic highpoint. If there’s anyone left who still hasn’t seen this movie and loves B & B, run out now & by “The Bela Lugosi Collection”. I hope to get back to the Ridgewood when something decent is there.
I’ve always wondered if my late parents ever went here, because when I was born, they lived on 28th St. between 3rd & 4th Aves. I know my neighbor across the street from me now on 22nd St. remembers going here, and she’s about 80 !
Incidentally, I notice previous posts mentioned Staten Island and Tony Bennett. Well, Staten Island has the renovated St. George Theater, and Tony just played there ! In fact I saw Gloria gaynor and “Mame” there. “Cats” (UGH !) is coming next year.
I,too, was there Saturday night. TV ? Unthinkable, after seeing those mountains spread across that giant screen ! I had forgotten how good that movie is ! And yes, that audience was really “with it” all the way ! I voted for “Gypsy” on the audience request ballot. If only ! I hope to come back for “The African Queen” next month !
Hi, Peter K ! “Queen of Outer Space” has one of cinema’s most deathless lines. Is is still as wonderful as I remember to hear Zsa Zsa intone:
“I HATE dot kveen !” ?
Hi Boys ! I’m still frankie and NO ONE ELSE is me except ME !!! I too like old movies, but I haven’t heard anyone say they actually went to the Ridgewood like I did. When are you guys going to go, see a movie, and talk to the staff ? The talk about old movies IS getting to be a bit much. If the Ridgewood is snatched from under us, we’ll all be sorry, so fellas, get over there !
Oh, Ken ! It looks fabulous ! A million thanks ! Hope lots of folk from the old neighborhood get to see it ! This also could have been the ‘60’s; I’m not sure.
I took the train trip to Suffern a few times, and it’s very pleasant. The theater is near the station. If anyone’s never been, you owe it to yourself. Brings the sad Ridgewood situation more into focus. “Rear Window” at the Loew’s Jersey had a CROWD !
Would love to have a meeting at the theater. Count me in. Anyone who hasn’t contacted Mr. Hirshon, by all means do so. But if the owners don’t want to preserve it ——???
“Don’t do Depp ?” The finest, most versatile, most sensible young actor working today ? They should build movie palaces just to show HIS movies ! Oh well, “chacun a son gout.” Say, if it’s gonna be 90 years in December, what better time for an anniversary celebration ? I’ll mention it in my letter to the owners.

Hi mikemovies ! Thanks for remembering yours truly ! I picked up “The Flying Serpent” for a few bucks starring the immortal George Zucco !

During the 80s, a friend took me to an invitational screening here of “That’s Life” with Julie Andrews & Jack Lemmon. I shoulda stayed home !

Thank you, Patrick, for addressing the issue ! You see, boys, we’re not alone ! DOWN, Warren !!! SIT !!! QUIET !!!

I believe the National Winter Garden is documented in the wonderful novel (and later film) “The Night They Raided Minsky’s.”
You bet ! There’s another enormous phallic apartment tower going up in back of the site. Good-bye, Brooklyn !

I went here with a friend to see the horrible “All The King’s Men.” The black couple behind us wouldn’t shut up, so we had to change our seat.
I just sent the Congresswoman an e-mail. Thanks for the link !

Does anyone have Assemblywoman Nolan’s phone number ?
I met Markowitz at a summer concert and he claims to have a “3 year plan” in place to restore the Kings.

Thanks for solving a mystery for me ! Always wanted to know where Mae played in Montclair !
