Complete restoration of the interior is almost complete. New seating and sound system are being installed. The Gulf Coast Symphony uses the Saenger as its concert hall. Opera, plays, ballet, and all types of concerts are held in this wonderful, frequently used theatre.
The correct name of this theatre is The Cricket – NOT the Ritz. I first saw “Gone With The Wind” in this theatre as a ten year old boy. It also housed the local telephone exchange, complete with “number please” operators, in rooms upstairs. The owner, Millard Weaver, also owned the phone company.
The Plaza Theater is located in one of the city’s most historic small neighborhood strip centers on Atlanta’s Ponce de Leon Avenue. The building has its original marquee. Its large downstairs auditorium is intact but the balcony level has been converted to show separate features. The Plaza shows excellent art and foreign films and is owned by the same folks that run the Garden Hills Cinema in Buckhead. The Plaza went through some rough times but the surrounding neighborhood has become trendy again in the past ten years and the theatre is very popular with intown
patrons.
I had the privilege of Ice Skating
in some of the shows at the Roxy Theatre. I was born and raised in
Brooklyn, New York and at 17 I became a
professional Ice Skater. I still have
some pictures a friend of mine took during one of the shows I performed in,
at the Roxy. It holds so many memories
and till this day it seems like yesterday. I skated at the theatre in
1955-1956. The re-opening of the ice
show was coupled with the movie opening
of The Rains of Ranchipore with Lana
Turner.( I think I spelled it right),if
not forgive me.

Although it was a sad ending to see the demolition of the original theatre, a new Glenwood Theatre has reopened a couple of blocks away, inside Metcalf South Mall.
This new fine arts theater is elegant and ornate and has many of the original furnishings from the old theater. In addition, there is also an upscale coffee shop. Also, the theater’s decor is reminiscent of old movie houses which were known for their classic atmospheres.

i used to live in okmulgee when i was younger and i would appreiciate if you would put more of the inside pictures. THe art deco style was something that made that movie theatre special.

Jay Hollis, owner of Millennium Entertainment, purchased the historic building in order to revitalize the classic single screen neighbourhood theatre. After nearly a year of renovation, hard work and dedication, the Rosebudâ„¢ Cinema Drafthouse opened its doors on December 10, 1999.
With its ability to comfortably accommodate up to 250 guests, the “Rosebud” provides a truly unique cinema and dining experience. Furnished with intimate cafe tables and plush velvet love seats, sofas and chairs the cinema offers comfortable “at home” seating. Guests can sit back and relax as they watch a film, catch a live band on stage, or soak in the relaxing ambiance of the Rosebud®.
I would only add that its one of the best movie experiences I’ve had.
I was an asst Mgr of the Castle Years49-50 It was owned by Balaba Katz Public Great States Inc. I was pleased to hear the old theater is back in action. To bad the Irving didnt make it. I was an Usher at the irving. Chalmers Dean was The city Mgr.

I was very please to see the information on the Paris Theatre as I have been trying to track down the Picture Palace Theatre for my research in my family tree and could never find it until now.
My Great Great Grandfather was the only Celebrated Irish Piper in Australia in 1863, with his brother they were Entertainers/Actors/ musicions and had played in the Picture Palace and of course elsewhere in Australia.
It has pleased me to no-ends to have read your web page, and now I can prove that there was a place called the Picture Palace and can add it to my research and place the picture of my ancestor with his bag pipes in a family story.
Would you know how I can find early stage plays show’s that were played between 1863 to 1920 in Australia.
I know his brother’s stage name and I have a piece of info on one of their performances when they came to Australia, as the add was placed in a newspaper in Melbourne in 1863.
As for anymore on there stage plays I just dont know where to look.
Can you please guide me in the right direction.

I wonder if this was the first Pussycat theater. I recall reading an interview with David Friedman(co-founder of Pussycat) saying that he opened the first Pussycat on Hill St in the early 1960’s in a theater that was not in business at the time.
I love the Academy and the huge tower. Once or twice a week they would show a prerelease preview and i would wait in a long line for tickets. You never new what you would see but sometimes the stars of the picture would come in late and sit in the back rows. Afterwards you were asked to fill out a movie card and write a review. I met some movie stars at the Academy.
Also I rember the black light they used inside lite up the invisible laundry markings on my shirts.
I was born in 1931 at 3422 W. 58 Pl. in the shadow of the Mesa Theatre. Until I was 12 and moved away the mesa was a big part of my everyday life. Next door to the Mesa was John’s candy store I rab errons for every day. I would hunt there trash for strips of old nitrate film to make stink bombs. Set them on fire than stamp them out and they gave off a back stinky smoke.
Once a month they gave me the scary job of sweeping out under the stage.
There were 8 dressing rooms only one was used by the ladies that worked there. I hung around all the time and loved that old theatre. Got any more pictures of it?
I grew up seeing movies in this theater, im 32 now, and my father was a union projectionist here. I can remember playing “3 card molly” in the alleys of the adams wheni was just 10. I use to walk a few blocks around to get a quick bight, and was never intimidated by the surroounding enviorment. I can remember even before it was oddly converted into the tri-plex, watching the scary movies, all by myself in the balconies, of the Adams theater. Taking a break from seeing the same movie twice ina night, i’d go out onto the fire escape and take in the excitement of the life in the streets below. Growing up in the suburbs, I appriciate the exposure, helped shape me for the person i am today.. Sometimes, the show there was actually more violent then on the silver screen. I use to love to explore all the little nooks and cranies of this massive decaying structure, always wondering, what had it looked, before time has taken its toll upon it. i would love to be able to re vist this playground of my youth one day..and hope to see the Adams, re born again would be great as well.
This cinema is now gone. Visted Beijing in Oct 2003 11 months after the previous posting and all signs of the cinema and shops have gone it is now a large paved area in front of a office complex. I still have pictures to post when the feature is returned.
Update on the Great Hall of the People (not a cinema but a sort of Congress Hall), it infact holds 10000 people and was recently used for Riverdance.
As a kid in the 40’s and 50’s, we went to we see a lot of movie’s there. Please bring her back!

The building looks the same as it did in 1920. There was never any exteior modernization to the Art Deco style…
As of tonight, 10/30-03, only the stage and fly are still standing. The entire auditorium and facade pictured above are gone.

From what I heard, The Coronet theater is closing down after the lord of the ring 3 return of the king.
