CINERAMA PART II (1970 to 1984): SAN DIEGO EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT ERA
5889 University Ave San Diego, CA 92115
Films that played during these years often premiered and remained at the Cinerama exclusively during their run. While this was represented by extended runs of films like Deliverance or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, on many occasions, films that didn’t perform well were paired with a second feature for the last part of their runs. Return Engagements of other popular hits were even returned to the Cinerama when even those pairings proved to be of limited appeal.
RE = Re-Issue/ Return Engagement
MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of engagement from another theater)
Listings include regular engagements only. Dates for this part represent the first day of release or premiere, and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. Test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, exclusive premieres and other private events are not included. Unless noted, presentations are all 35mm-mono sound presentation.

Are we sure the entire building was completely demolished? The presence of the “hut” on top of both buildings would indicate extensive remodeling, but total demolition seems a stretch.
@kagemusha98 OLIVER wasn’t 70mm?! Oh man… I have to go check the ads because I think it was advertised as 70mm! I’ve been toying with a cleaned up version of the playlist so this is invaluable. Thanks!
I probably would have but I was Duty Officer at Fort Lewis (24 hour duty) at those times.
I have the flyer for the 2003 fest somewhere so I’ll try and post that.
CINERAMA PART I (1963 to 1970): RESERVED SEAT ENGAGEMENT ERA
5889 University Ave San Diego, CA 92115
The Cinerama Theatre opened on November 20, 1962 with The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm and was heralded by local media as the first major movie theater in San Diego in over 25 years. Unlike other theaters, this was the first theater constructed exclusively for widescreen movies in San Diego. The Cinerama served as the premier house for the biggest films of its day and often played many films for several months. Tickets were sold at various locations around San Diego and guaranteed a specific seat.

Are we sure the entire building was completely demolished? The presence of the “hut” on top of both buildings would indicate extensive remodeling, but total demolition seems a stretch.
Does anyone have pictures of the demolition?
This might be the Palace in question…

Amazon is getting ready to buy 3 blocks (yes, blocks) in Downtown Seattle to build office towers. The King is on one of those blocks.

Is 63 weeks really the length-of-run record for a Seattle theatre?
Some good info here: http://www.grindhousedatabase.com/index.php/Roxy_Twin
Here’s a pretty great write-up on the Capri:
http://www.kpbs.org/news/2010/feb/02/capri-theater/
The first run of WEST SIDE STORY was at the Capri (aka Park) in 1962.
KING OF KINGS had its 70mm run at the California in Downtown San Diego.
MUSIC MAN didn’t have a 70mm run, but its first run was at the Fox (aka Copley Symphony Hall), also in Downtown.

Look for Photos 22 and 23.
@kagemusha98 OLIVER wasn’t 70mm?! Oh man… I have to go check the ads because I think it was advertised as 70mm! I’ve been toying with a cleaned up version of the playlist so this is invaluable. Thanks!
I bought the ticket a day or two in advance, so the computer probably thought I was buying a HORSE WHISPERER ticket.

I probably would have but I was Duty Officer at Fort Lewis (24 hour duty) at those times. I have the flyer for the 2003 fest somewhere so I’ll try and post that.

Is a good place to start. It’s not exhaustive, but if it was in 70mm, it was big.
CINERAMA PART I (1963 to 1970): RESERVED SEAT ENGAGEMENT ERA
5889 University Ave
San Diego, CA 92115
The Cinerama Theatre opened on November 20, 1962 with The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm and was heralded by local media as the first major movie theater in San Diego in over 25 years. Unlike other theaters, this was the first theater constructed exclusively for widescreen movies in San Diego. The Cinerama served as the premier house for the biggest films of its day and often played many films for several months. Tickets were sold at various locations around San Diego and guaranteed a specific seat.
RE = Re-Issue/ Return Engagement
MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of engagement from another theater)
RSE = Reserved-Seat Engagement
All listing from San Diego Union, San Diego Tribune and “70mm in San Diego” by Michael Coate and William Kallay.

@Patrick Cool! I’ve made more than a few mistakes in some of my posts and I’m hoping to correct them.
Pretty good…
But…
An “Edit Comment” feature would have been aces.

Pretty large, but adds for some great examination of details.
Might as well get a can of kerosene and some matches ready… (yes, I’m aware this post will come back to haunt me at my arson trial).
It rocked and it will be missed.

Just restore the big auditorium and you’ll be turning people away.
