There happen to be local opera companies, The Bronx Symphony Orchestra and other high profile artists that have filled Madison Square Garden that currently perform at the nearby Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Although this building sits on the lovely Lehman College campus, it is a modern, unadorned eyesore that has absoutely no architectural appeal. However performances frequently sell out in this common theater. If it is possible for Lehman Center to be a successful venue, people should watch out for the reopening of the Paradise!
YankeeMike, There must be weekend tours. On Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 I got the grand tour. That was the same day that the opera company was performing across the street at Loew’s Jersey. The tour ended with a dixie cup filled with hot brown water that the guide referred to as hot chocolate. However, it was a nice gesture on a cold day.
The Letters on the roof disappeared many years ago. The contraption that held them up is still mounted on the roof. I believe that it was because of saturation releases that most movie palaces were plexed.
Since the clock has a twin, It might be possible to re-cast the figure so that St. George can slay his fire breathing dragon again.
Wouldn’t that go wonderfully with the fully restored sign?
I don’t think that any changes should come to the face of this glorious beauty. Passing this movie palace reminds us that she has stood proudly up against the test of time. Her exterior reminds passers by of the glory days, the bad days, the multiplex days and the sad day that her brass doors closed leaving us all to wonder whether or not we would ever be able descend gracefully down her magnificent staircase again. Looking at that sign can unlock the door to such wonderful memories for many different people. If it’s name is altered it might remind people that change isn’t always a good thing. When I look that sign, I remember the sweet smell of popcorn in the grand lobby. I remember the haunting sound of the music from sleeping beauty bouncing off of the darkened statues and intricate carvings and how I felt overwhelmed yet fascinated, wandering this unique place as a child.
People Assumed that the crew removing the dragon were construction workers that might have been repairing the building Beardbear31. No one would suspect that theives would have done this in broad daylight at the city’s third largest shopping district.
Great News Everyone!
For the first time in many years The bright red letters spelling Loew’s Paradise Theatre have been illuminated with red neon light.
Perhaps the sunburst will be next! During the dark hours of the night the light can bee seen from blocks away. The scaffolding and mesh screening still haven’t come down, but some new sections of the rear wall have been steam cleaned.
Hello Ziggy, I too have missed visiting Cinema Treasures. With the arrival such good weather I’ve been out and about suffering from a premature case of spring fever.
The crew is slowly but surely cleaning and grouting the ballustrade and rear wall above the attached taxpayer (not shown on the top of the page). Otherwise I haven’t noticed much else on the outside which is looking wonderful.
On Thursday nights at 7pm, the theatre runs classic movies hosted by drag queens Hedda Lettuce or Nedda Iceberg for only six dollars.
Some enthusiasts even dress up as their favorite characters in the movie playing. Theatre patrons are also encouraged to shout out any favorite lines or sing along to favorite songs in musicals. There are also up three chances to win Theatre tickets if your number is called. I also believe that the Rocky Horror Picture is sometimes shown at midnight. Overall it is a wonderful theatre to visit on a Thursday night.
Mommie Dearest did not turn Joan into a monster. She Obviously had an ungrateful stepdaughter who had the nerve to put a good dress on a wire hanger and intrude on her most intimate moments. There was only room for one drama queen in that house and Christina Crawford wasn’t it. That is exactly why I have decided to keep toy dogs as pets and not children (at least until I am in my mid thirties and in need of a good publicity stunt). :)
Happy New Year Everyone!
I have just awakened, and will probably need all weekend to recover from last nights festivities, which went on until the late morning.
Unfortunately, since much of the east bronx is more suburban, many residents drive to Bay Plaza, or Whitestone, as well as many nearby Westchester theatres. The more cosmopolitan west Bronx residents usually hail a taxi, bus or ride the subway into nearby Manhattan which is only minutes away. Some even venture out by foot. There have been proposals to turn the old Kingsbridge Armory into a multiplex theatre and retail venue. This would be ideal. The building is one of the largest armories in the country and has an underground tunnel that leads all the way to upper Manhattan.
The theatre is a few blocks north of the Manhattan border in Kingsbridge which is located in the north west section of The Bronx. Being that the theatre bears the name Marble Hill it is confusing to some. Some may even claim that this is in the south east section of Riverdale (also part of The Bronx). Officially speaking, the theatre is located in the Bronx.
I think that Concerned Taxpayer probably has just about the same amount of intellect as George W. Bush does. I agree Mr. Life’s too short. We should ignore him. Understand that this theatre will transport residents into the old world charm of a movie palace. It will culturally enhance the community and be an inspiration for the youth of today and tomorrow. With good public programming, interactive educational activities, gala evenings, exhibitions and the employment that it will provide area residents with, this theatre can become an irreplaceable asset to Lombard. When we leave the elegance and beauty of our homes behind, we want to be surrounded by even more of it in public spaces. Without it we have nothing but stale spaces with dropped ceilings, plasterboard and of course, multiplexes. This is a minimal amount of your tax dollar that is being used for a good cause. You should worry about the billions that are being spent by the fool I mentioned above on the oil war!

Isn’t there already a new play about Brooklyn?

Yes it is Valencia. Especially with those dropped ceilings.
Perhaps if this became a local attraction the area wouldn’t be so bad.
The original sunburst was a bright orange and yellow with jezebel red lettering. I do agree that the royal blue background is just a bit much.

The exterior has been landmarked, so I suppose the signage is also included.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Hugs and kisses darlings!
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
………Love Always,

Mark,
I only wish that I knew how to use a digital camera and transfer images onto a website. If you or anyone does, please do so!

Dont give up on your beloved theatre Lombard!
UPDATE!
THE SUNBURST HAS BEEN REPAINTED A BRILLIANT YELLOW ON THE LOEWS PARADISE SIGN. THE BACKGROUND IS A DEEP ROYAL BLUE AND THE LETTERING IS JEZEBEL RED.
THE FABULOUSNESS CONTINUES MY DARLINGS!
So much detail was put in the rear of the auditorium. What a tragedy.
