TC: Thanks for the photo!!! I took a digital photo while parked in front of the theatre! It’s really amazing that I even found it as I was looking to find a theatre on their main drag, but located the Rogers on Marion which is NOT main street!
I just visited Shelby today and accidentally came upon this theatre while visiting the historic area of downtown Shelby! I couldn’t believe the beautiful art deco facade on this theatre and didn’t realize it was listed on CT until I returned to my computer! I was so pleased to read what Ross has written and would like to learn more about this theatre to be restored!
Kevin: The only other CT theatre named Wintergarden seems to be in Sydney Australia so perhaps the Jamestown Wintergarden should be listed, too with whatever correct information can be included. Thanks.
Kevin: Email me at as I’d like to tell you about the Jamestown Forum where I have posted your Wintergarden Theatre remarks for past and present Jamestown residents to read and comment on.
Interesting to read about this theatre with the Eberson name, but sadly it didn’t continue to be a single screen theatre as originally intended by the son of John Eberson, Drew.
If anyone who has posted on this site have any old Grand photos, please let me know. Am still waiting to hear from WSL and hopefully see that person’s photos!
Was this an atmospheric theatre? The Golden State in Monterey is listed as being a “budget atmospheric”. Such a shame to read that the Golden State in Riverside is “now a parking lot”. :–(
Randyloveslucy: Go to www.lucy-desi.org and you can read more about Lucille Ball and the annual Lucy Festival. Do you know exactly where the former Wintergarden was located in downtown Jamestown and what is in that location now? I do wish that the name Palace could be returned to the Reg Lenna Civic Center…perhaps the Lenna Palace?
May this great theater architect rest in peace and go to the great theatre in the sky. The likes of Mr. Greene, Mr. Rapp, Mr. Lamb, Mr. Eberson and so many others of their generation we probably won’t ever see again. I feel that today’s generation only knows the modern multi-plexes so it is up to basically the baby-boomer generation to restore the theatres of the 20’s-40’s or they won’t get restored!
I taped the above show and just watched it! Very good and hope they do more theatres in the very near future! I’m sure if CT members contact the History Channel they will do more!
The virtual tour of the Paramount is great!
Does anyone have a number to contact the volunteers who are restoring the art deco Rogers Theatre?
lostmemory: Do you know if Charles Benson of Wilson NC built other theatres?

Kevin: Thanks so much for your Winter Garden memories. From your description it sounds like the theatre was within the block and not on a corner.
Alliance Ohio is a college town and should have a single screen theatre! I wonder if the former theatre location is now another parking lot?
An Eberson/art deco closed? Someone to the rescue!

Would love to see a photo(s) of this theatre!
Always enjoy seeing an Eberson/atmospheric theatre as the featured CT Theatre! Hope to visit Richmond someday and check this one out!
And does anyone know who owns the Palace Theatre?

Nice to read that the City of Knoxville now has 2 respectable restored theatres and both are on Gay Street!
What a wonderful idea….a Valentine’s Day screening of Casablanca!
Was your “Somewhere in Time” weekend in February connected with the famous movie staring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour?
Does the theatre still have its 3/10 Wurlitzer organ?
