just like when AMC had in the past back when stadium seating was a few years in its infancy…recently I was on the theater’s tickets site and found that advance ticketing is now on sale for the next Narnia movie. The first one I saw in one of the Succsunna’s newer theaters, theater #9, which will show the next film in DLP. Checking the rockaway showtimes, it’s not in DLP but in plain old 35mm. Pretty soon they’ll have sales for upcoming summer blockbusters, and hopefully the new Batman will be showing in that new IMAX screen!!! Not to mention Kung Fu Panda as well!!! FYI, the next indiana jones, which will return to rockaway after three movies at the old rockaway, will be presented in 35mm, not in DLP, since it’s the way the director wanted it to be. Last summer proved to be a busy one for Rockaway as it made more money than Parsippany due to its size and price. Parsippany, on the other hand, showed most of their summer hits in digital and sometimes showed an Indian film, which Rockaway rarely does since the last movie playing there to be in Indian was The Namesake, which bombed moreso at the Rockaway theater than any Clearview theater, some of which have still running the movie. Pretty soon the Newton theater will reopen, and that would take away some of the Rockaway moviegoers who drive down Route 15 to this big theater!!!

I think it means all of the apes movies. There are five, and the remake won’t be shown, thank god.

Yesterday’s purchase of Bear Stearns by JPMorgan Chase is similiar to Clearview’s buyout from Cablevision nearly ten summers ago this year, a month before the chain was set to open its newest theater and the only clearview with the most screens, the Mansfield 15 (later shortened to 14). Originally made by Nelson Furman and completed by Clearview, this theater finally got digital projection in half of its 14 screens, a year after its sister theaters in Morris County with 10 or more screens got the same systems from Technicolor Digital/Real 3D/DLP/Dolby digital cinema. At the time of the purchase, Cablevision’s stock was more expensive than Clearview, and after buying the Wiz (closed), Rangers, Knicks, and the Garden, not to mention the legendary Radio City and Beacon Theatres, the stock tanked due to languishing debt. Since the mid-2000’s, the company has rebounded due to growth in its highly profitable cable business and attendance at its venues. They even bought those Voom HD channels from the failed venue. Recently there were rumors that Cablevision might spin off its Rainbow Media group (which also includes the now hot AMC movie channel plus WE and Fuse) into a separate entity. But with this credit crisis/recession whatever, that might not happen.

moviebuff82 commented about Regal to possibly end newspaper listings on Mar 17, 2008 at 12:24 pm

I used to go to a Regal cinema, the Hadley 16 over in South Plainfield. I went there to see “Hulk”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, back in 2003 and 2005. For “Hulk”, me and my respite group were very late for the show since the movie started on time rather than the previews, and this was before regal united with other chains to show the digital preshow now known as “First Look”. I was a bit upset. But after seeing “Charlie” at Succasunna first and then seeing it again at the larger Hadley theater, I didn’t mind at all. The only gripe was that the sound was Dolby and not digital and that the projection was so-so. I prefer AMC over Regal and I never been to a Cinemark theater since those places are far away. As for movie listings, Cinemascore keeps track of the showtimes for the local papers, and they are almost accurate. If a theater’s showtimes are not listed, then they tell you to call the theater for more info or go to the website. Nowadays there are fewer movie ads in the papers and one reason why the newspapers are going up in price. Why pay .50 to 1.00 when you can get it for free by internet, or if you don’t have it, by phone!!! For regal and loews theaters owned by AMC, dial 1-800 Fandango or fandango.com. For other chains, go to moviefone.com and/or movietickets.com. THat’s the way of the future. Even Cablevision has a somewhat accurate version of Hollywood.tv on its cable service.

moviebuff82 commented about 10,000 Screens to be converted to show 3-D movies on Mar 14, 2008 at 11:41 am

Even though 35mm is still being used, 70mm is making a comeback. Samsara will be the first film shot in true giant widescreen since Baraka, and IMAX versions of blockbuster movies have added lots of money to the regular versions that play in theaters. My local AMC in Rockaway is converting one of its screens to an IMAX MPX theater, using a digital version of what will likely be the longest running 70mm film format of all time.

That’s nice of them. They’re the biggest posters of movies I’ve seen in a Morris County theater. They put the posters on the front and sides of the theater, just not the back of it right by Route 80, where motorists would pay too much attention on the posters and less on the road. Inside the theater, there is a very big chandelier that looks like a shining star, and there are two floors…one for the public to enter and one for the employees to work the projection rooms. The elevator is only for employees and not costumers. One thing that would be missed if a theater was converted to IMAX would be the lack of seating for the disabled, but AMC might put some gaps for those wheelchairs near the front of the screen.

I for one reason went to like 15 or so movies, mostly during the summer season when most people go to the movies. THat was last year. This year, I’ve seen around 5 or so, and for the summer there will be fewer threequels as Indiana Jones comes back. I’ll probably see that, as well as The Dark Knight in IMAX, and Iron Man. I’m a busy worker at a CVS, so I try to go the movies during days when attendance is slow, such as a sunday afternoon when everyone else is watching sports on their HDTVs. Unlike sports, movies are commercial free and don’t have intermissions like they used to anymore, which can be a pain but if you go with someone and have to go to the bathroom, when you come back, the person will tell you what you’ve been missing.

I first saw a digital movie in a theater by seeing “Nightmare Before Xmas 3D” at the Jersey Gardens 20 in Elizabeth back when digital 3D was not a major thing. The picture was sharp and the sound good, but the brightness was a bit dark…due in part to the dark shaded Real D glasses. The next showing was a DLP showing of Ratatouille at the AMC Garden State 16 in Paramus. Since i didn’t get to sit near the guardrail, I sat in the lower seats, and the picture was brighter and the sound great, but it was not sharp. The third and last movie I saw in DLP was “National Treasure 2” in Succasunna in Technicolor Digital Cinema, and the picture and sound was good (a little quiet at times), and the titles and credits were sharp while the action was a bit blurry. Out of all the presentations, the Technicolor DC was the best. Currently nearly every popular Clearview theater except the smaller ones have half or some screens equipped with this technology, and Clearview is doing the right thing. Look at what Beowulf (and Hanna Montana) did for the digital industry. The only movies that lure people away from their homes that they can’t get on bluray, DVD or TV are movies that are shown in IMAX 3-D, IMAX, and digital 3-D. Heck, some theaters are showing films in a format that even the latest HDTVs cant produce, 4K.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Mar 11, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Maybe. That way or the other way you mentioned are two ways AMC can create an IMAX theater. I think the best way is to remove the lower seats, which are the worst seats to be in when watching a movie, and moving the screen upwards will make a big difference. Sure, the screen won’t be as large as a regular IMAX screen, but it will be digital and have the same uncompressed sound and 3-D that Imax fans have enjoyed in the past. This new system is called Imax MPX (multiplex) and was created in 2003 for use in multiplex theaters. Another theater that is not listed that has imax attached to it is the Regal 18 in New Roc City, not to mention the AMC Loews in Pittsburgh that will have one of its screens into an IMAX MPX theater.

moviebuff82 commented about Cinepolis Parsippany on Mar 11, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Actually I’m wrong. Hanna Montana played on a lot of showtimes at each theater due to its short length. Screen #4 has digital projection.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Jersey Gardens 20 on Mar 11, 2008 at 1:38 pm

This theater was the third Loews theater (following the 10 plex in Paramus and the Loews Meadow Six) to get digital projection, and was the first theater to keep the equipment. Two screens are equipped. One uses the SDDS-8 system, and another uses Dolby Digital Cinema. Driving to the place can be tricky at times, as the theater is located to the right of the mall. There are two floors in the building, 10 for each screen. This theater is located not to far from the Linden theater and just minutes from the only theater in Newark to show movies, the Screens on Springfield, which used to be a Loews until this theater opened.

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 commented about Cinepolis Mansfield on Mar 11, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Actually, it’s Technicolor Digital Cinema, and half of the 14 screens have been equipped with DLP, screens 1-7 have the new system, while the rest play plain old 35mm film. Clearview’s Parsippany and Succasunna theaters only have one screen for each theater, while the Morristown location has half of its 10 screens equipped with d cinema. Kinnelon probably has only one screen equipped with DLP out of 11, since that theater is composed of two separate buildings. Unfortunately, Clearview will not install DLP in its older theaters, meaning that the smaller ones will close soon.

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Mar 11, 2008 at 1:25 pm

How is work going on the installation of the Imax screen? If it opens, then the theater would be called AMC Rockaway 14 with IMAX. That would tie that theater with the one owned by Clearview in Mansfield for most screens in the northwest corner of the state. Clearview’s Mansfield theater, according to dcinematoday.com, has half of its screens equipped with digital projection by Technicolor, while the AMC in Rockaway will have one big digital screen that will mean more money and huge attendance numbers when Batman arrives!!!

The princess bride was a favorite of mine when I was young, as well as my cousin Chrissy. It would be nice seeing it on the big screen, so I should tell her when she feels better to check it out. Of course, she has the VHS version of the film. Too bad it’s not on blu-ray. The movie was Andre the Giant’s only film role before he died, leaving The Big Show, his son, as a successor…he will wrestle Floyd Meriweather in Wrestlemania 24. As for the movie showing at the theater, hopefully the flooding will subside so I can get there with Chrissy on time.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Dine-In Bridgewater 7 on Mar 5, 2008 at 11:42 am

It will be sad when that theater closes. The seats at the screen I went to weren’t the rocking seats; they were more like those found at the allwood and menlo park 12 theaters. Recently when AMC took over, they introduced a digital preshow before the film began (before it absorbed into the First Look program) and at the beginning of the feature, there is a blue screen notice that this theater has been checked by the bridgewater board of health. Among the AMC trailers I saw was a spot featuring a flying cartoon eagle which is now used in promo spots for Best Buy, the chain that promoted the trailer called “Soar” with AMC’s Silence is Golden program. I like that trailer better than the crying baby one, but I still miss the days when General Cinema managed that theater and clifton commons. GC had some pretty good trailers that were done by ILM beginning in 1986 until 2002. As for Red Bank, that’s a long drive away. The closest town that has film festivals is Morristown as well as Dover, where the Black Maria film festival is held.
