Are you guys working with theatre chains to get more photos of theatres – PAST as well as present – uploaded here? Also, any plans to reach out to the plethora of folks who have created regionally based theatre websites to upload their pics here?
One of my film club friends spoke with some folks from another film club who saw Inception here. They said they hated the movie. My friend told them, “It’s because you saw it here instead of The Dome.” LOL!
IMO, runs neck in neck with Regal’s LA Live complex as the most overrated theatre in Los Angeles. It’s constantly patroned by stuffy, pretentious West LA types who prefer subtitles and corsets to explosions and VFX. Shortly after opening (as Brad mentioned), they got delusions of grandeur and started mixing big titles like the last 007 flick, “Inception” and the aforementioned “The Dark Knight” alongside their stuffy arthouse fare on their postage stamp sized screens.
I used to only come here during Academy Awards season but, since they now run the 10 Best Picture nominees at other theatres, I happily avoid this joint like the plague!
I made an errors in this theatre’s info when I submitted it to CT years ago. 1. The city needs to be changed/updated to St. Ann, MO (instead of St. Louis). 2. The theatre opened as a single screener in 1969 (see JAlex’s post for more detailed info).
I saw X-MEN FIRST CLASS on Saturday 6/4 – 7:10 PM show. There was an introduction to the film at my screening as well as the free popcorn. Nice sized crowd – the 2 center aisle seats were packed to the gills. I guesstimate they sold about 500 seats or so (maybe more). Presentation still top notch – sound was nice and crackling with the THX/Dolby combo sounding as brisk as ever & a clear & nicely lit DP image on screen. With them showing trailers for “Green Lantern” & “Harry Potter 7.2”, hopefully that means that they will go day and date with ArcLight. I’ve already made up my mind to see “Harry Potter 7.2” here if they do indeed get it!
Either the good folks at Chinese Theatres copied their corporate info word for word from Mann’s website and forgot to change it. OR…maybe they have bought Mann out all together and will slowly but surely take over the remaining theatres.
Needless to say, CT Gatekeepers, this theatre’s description – along with removal of Mann’s link and putting Chinese Theatres link in its place – needs to be updated.
And somebody tell me what other friggin theatres does Chinese own? They have it splashed in their About page that they own 54 screens or somthing like that. That’s news to me!
Somehow they’re managing to book X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Maybe the new team has savvier bookers. IMO, they should offer Grauman’s and 3 more screens at Chinese 6 as bait for any major blockbusters they feel like booking. Day and date with ArcLight ala “Terminator Salvation” ain’t a bad idea, either.
So…the most famous movie theatre in the world is now a mixed use facility that will use filler programming (comedy shows, concerts, festivals and so much more!) to keep the lights on while ArcLight continues to swipe the majority of major film bookings. Sigh…
Tickets are on sale for Friday evening shows and the entire weekend day/night shows at both Grauman’s & Chinese 6 at Movie Tickets.com. I don’t know why both complexes are shutting down during the day on Friday – no news has been reported.
All in all, rumors of this being Mann’s last weekend as operator are just that: RUMORS!
I’m wondering if the new owners are just taking a week off to tweak some stuff in the theatre before the X-MEN relaunch. I’ll have to see if Chinese 6’s listings have been removed, too.
And where did y'all hear that Mann is handing over OPERATIONS of the theatre? I haven’t seen that in the news. We all know that ownership is changing but I have not seen any reports that Mann was bowing out as operator.
What’s left of the marquee is still standing, I believe. I think the screen is completely gone now.

Soon to be 1. I heard they’re shutting down both Glendale locations this year.

@Kyle: You know I’m doing back flips, somersaults, belly flops and dancing like my 5 year old kid after a few too many candy bars! Pure awesomeness!

Having fun tweaking the Street View this Memorial Day morning! Great great feature!
As seen by the Street View, this theatre is now an LA Fitness gym.
Street View needs to be upgraded – the shot is from it’s days as a Pacific.
OOOOH!!!! PRETTY!!!! Now we all gotta re-lern this site!
Congratulations folks! Excellent job!
Just answered my own question…
Either the good folks at Chinese Theatres copied their corporate info word for word from Mann’s website and forgot to change it. OR…maybe they have bought Mann out all together and will slowly but surely take over the remaining theatres.
Heh…wishful thinking. I’m guessing it’s option “A”.

Very sadly, I stand corrected.

Confirming what Danny said: Grauman’s IS getting “X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.” So don’t be sad, Brad. :)
Although my double post indicates otherwise. ROFL!!!
We shall continue to be patient… :)
