moviebuff82 commented about IMAX will expand into AMC theaters on Dec 6, 2008 at 7:09 am

Several AMC IMAX theaters will open on the same day that “The Dark Knight” gets re-released in traditional and IMAX theaters just in time for Oscar balloting; by then I will have seen the movie a second or third time on Blu-Ray for christmas, since that edition has the IMAX scenes intact.

Not only the game was shown in 3D theaters, but it was also shown online at the league’s website. The score of the game was Chargers 34, Raiders 7.

moviebuff82 commented about Redstone to possibly sell NA on Dec 5, 2008 at 11:51 am

I never been to those theaters since they are located far and wide around NJ. Back in the 90’s, NA dominated urban cities like Newark and Sayreville with theaters that were visible near the turnpike. Nowadays they’re gone due to competition from other chains and other issues. The closest NA theater near me is the one in Edgewater, which was constructed not too far from where I used to job sample at the Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen. That theater is still thriving and doing better business than the Loews in Ridgefield Park, which is aging. Any chain that is not losing money can buy NA’s theaters and still make a profit.

Next thing u know, there will be 3-D football, baseball, basketball, and hockey!!! I can’t wait to see my Yankees in 3-D without ever paying a ticket or getting stuck in traffic to the stadium!!!

Great poster. That was 50 years ago yesterday, when the Hall mostly played movies alongside its Xmas shows.

I think so. This was before the ratings system came into effect in the later 1960’s and porn broke out into the mainstream.

How about Gran Torino? That’s a WB title and a masterpiece by Eastwood.

I first heard that story too. Too bad these events are closed to the public and only press are allowed. Wish I was one of them and attended the event rather than not watching it without the NFL Network, which is televising the game as well as local stations in the San Diego and Oakland areas. At least I’ll check online, as both teams are struggling to make the playoffs. This isn’t the first time an NFL game was shown in 3D, that would go to the 2004 Super Bowl between the Pats and Cats, which was shown shortly after the game was live. Maybe sometime if the Giants make the playoffs, I could see it at my local AMC in Rockaway!!!

Next year it will house an IMAX screen.

moviebuff82 commented about Digital Projection Not Always Perfect on Dec 2, 2008 at 3:29 pm

During a screening of Ratatouille at the AMC in Paramus, the projection was blurry since I sat too close to the screen. The 3D Nightmare movie was too dark due to watching it with 3D glasses. And during screenings of movies at the Mansfield theater, some of the surrounds did not work and on one of the screens, the picture was a bit upward.

Upcoming releases at this theater are two….Nobel Son, an independent movie about a family whose father wins the Nobel Prize (great reviews), and Punisher: War Zone, a sequel to the first Punisher movie that doesn’t have the first movie’s star and will likely bomb against this past weekend’s number one movie, Four Xmases.

I agree. At the AMC in Rockaway, 1.85 fills the entire screen while 2.35 or more shrinks it.

I agree. Possibly due to uncertain economic conditions this has delayed the IMAX rollout into AMC’s theaters, as well as other chains who want to install IMAX.

January 23rd is the date that my local AMC theater here in Rockaway will get an IMAX screen, as well as other select theaters.

Bad news, Dark Knight fans. According to Superherohype.com, The Dark Knight won’t return to IMAX theaters both old and new next month. I guess the next IMAX movie to play here will be “The Day the Earth Stood Still” a month and 11 days after it’s out next week. At least I’ll see the IMAX scenes on BluRay when I get it for christmas.

moviebuff82 commented about Radio City Music Hall on Dec 1, 2008 at 11:55 am

BTW, has attendance for the Christmas show increased or decreased from last year? Right now we’re in a recession that started a month after the Xmas show opened last year, and people can’t afford a lot of money to watch a christmas tradition that has been a mainstay of the hall forever. Maybe Cablevison could follow suit and broadcast the show to all the Clearviews that have DLP, like they did with the Knicks/Rangers games at the venue that it owns, the Garden.

Outside the theater, someone forgot to remove the poster for Pride and Glory, as that movie is no longer playing at this theater. All the other posters are up to date.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Nov 30, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Just went to see 007 again yesterday afternoon at a 1:10 showing, and the presentation was much improved from the last time I went. Sound was coming from all directions and the projection was top-notch. Theater was busy too. I sat in the very top of the auditorium (theater #11) as opposed to the seating right by the railing, so I can get a clearer view.

The only digital stuff that AMC shows at this theater is the preshow and special feature content provided by National Cinemedia, such as the Met and NCM Fathom series. How are those faring alongside the regular movies that play at this theater? Once IMAX kicks in, attendance will skyrocket and lines will be long.

moviebuff82 commented about Disney resigns with IMAX on Nov 25, 2008 at 4:48 pm

And now it’s out on Blu-Ray, the way it was meant to be seen. They should re-release Fantasia (the 1940 one) in IMAX since it was filmed in that ratio (same goes for the pre widescreen Disney movies of that era). Next year will be 50 years of Disney’s first venture into 70mm with the release of Sleeping Beauty, also out on Blu-Ray in its original wide ratio. At the time, it was expensive to make, and made very little money for Disney during his last years with the studio. 70mm was also used for The Black Hole, Tron, and The Black Cauldron, not to mention several Touchstone films.

That’s amazing. Same could be said for “Beowulf” as it wasn’t as popular in Rockaway while in Parsippany and Succasunna, it did better because of the 3-D.

moviebuff82 commented about Disney resigns with IMAX on Nov 25, 2008 at 11:55 am

One error, Dan. The last Disney movie to be shown in IMAX was “Treasure Planet”, not “Treasure Island”, as that’s a futuristic remake of a classic story. Looks like the Mouse House has to play catchup against other studios which have signed with IMAX.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Loews Meadow 6 on Nov 25, 2008 at 11:49 am

CinemarkFan, it’s called http://www.in70mm.com/ BTW, not only did the Loews in Secaucus back in its heyday before AMC took over showed stuff in 70mm, but in all three surround sound formats, including 8-channel SDDS, which is very similiar to the 70mm surround sound mixes of the past.

I know. Forgot to mention that too. This also applies to other theaters owned by AMC and some of these have the date of TBD, since other AMC theaters might get it soon. It all depends on the survival of IMAX, since unlike AMC is publicly traded here in America and Canada, and is one of the worst performing stocks I’ve seen. Hopefully the stock will rise based on continued strength on IMAX versions of popular movies, as was the case with The Dark Knight.
