Been a LONG LONG time since I’ve seen that building. :)

We who dwell in Los Angeles salute you! We’ll be thinking of you while watching some lame romcom in the Cinerama Dome while this festival is going on. Sigh…

Went here 1 time in 1986. It was small, boxy & drenched in mid-1970’s decor.

I wonder if we’d be having this conversation if Mann built 10 extra screens instead of 6 during the Hollywood & Highland construction…

I give more credence to Danny’s point than Mr. Dakota’s given the state of the industry nowadays. All of Mr. Dakota’s points of reference speak of 40 year old films. The industry has (OBVIOUSLY) changed considerably since then. Leverage does plays a factor.

That is not to denigrate Mr. Dakota’s experience in any way, shape or form. Just agreeing with Danny that the game has changed. Which is exactly why many CT'ers are closely monitoring the Graumans’s Chinese situation. With the constant rumors that it will be turned into a mixed-use facility soon, it’s important to track and hope for it’s longevity as a cinema.

Chris Utley commented about Kentucky drive-in theaters see popularity rise again on Aug 15, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Mono sound? I don’t know about Kentucky but here in Southern California, all our drive-in sound is pumped through an FM transmitter that feeds to our car radios. And the picture ain’t dim either thanks to a projection system called Tecnalight!

Danny’s right. It’s still open. Glendale Marketplace listing on Mann Theatres' website as of 8/13/2011

Chris Utley commented about Vineland Drive-In still thrives on Aug 10, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I’ve been splitting time between here and the Mission Tiki all summer long. A HUGE part of its success is the fact that it’s the only game in (or relatively close to) town. They’d benefit from a lot repave, some tech work on their Technalight projection system & an upgraded snack bar among other things. Nevertheless, I’m glad that the Vineland is still hanging around.

Norman: Some of your pictures look to have been swiped from CT and uploaded to the St. Louis Flashback Theatres & Drive-Ins Facebook page. Just thought I’d let you know.

Riot Breaks Out At Grauman’s Chinese During “Electric Daisy Carnival" Premiere

I wonder if this will make the owners change their plans to make this theatre double as a nightclub/concert hall/etc…

How can they add variety when ArcLight is showing all the other big titles?

Captain America 3D in The Dome was a decent presentation…although for some reason the left middle section of the screen was slightly blurred when the 3D was turned on. It wasn’t horrendous enough to buzzkill the screening but there definitely needs to be some tweaking of the projector.

One other thing I noticed: They made an attempt to fix the keystoning issues by raising up the bottom masking on the bottom left & bottom right corners of the screen. Truth be told, it looked to me like they brought in some of the side masking. Screen was definitely not as gargantuanly wide as it normally is for this presentation.

Sorry for the lack of pictures to show y'all what I’m talkin bout.

Someone at Rave must have read my last few comments. Because they have improved on their cleanliness and customer service. In addition, they now properly name themselves in their pre-IMAX spiel to the audience.

The decor’s changed too. All the neon green is gone. An orange/burnt orange/brown color scheme is now it its place. The 3rd floor bar/restaurant is now named “Rave Burger Bar” – although they only have 1 burger (!!!) on their menu. Even with all the updates and improvements, I still only come for IMAX. Blame it on the $2 parking…

I was at the Saturday 7/16 7:30 PM show for Harry Potter 7.2. I can confirm Cliffs’s findings including costumes in the lobby and trailers (although our showing also got “Happy Feet Two” as a 3D trailer as well). Harry should keep Chinese in business till late August or so, $168 million buck opening weekend and all.

No issues with the Dark Knight Rises trailer…they’ve only been shooting the flick for a month and a half. Can’t expect a plethora of footage. The teaser for The Dark Knight was just voiceover with the Bat logo exploding to a deck of playing cards with the Joker card hurling right at the screen.

Pics I uploaded were from opening night of this short lived D/I. Opening feature was “Shrek The Third.” They initally only showed 1 feature but after a short time they started showing second features…but the catch was they charged separate admission and cleared out the entire lot once the first feature was done.

I see no good reason why they couldn’t try this again at an abandoned Circuit City lot or someplace. All they need is a troth of port-a-potties and a couple of food trucks and BOOM! :)
