the 7.1 surround sound presentation of ‘Into the Woods’ here at Bethesda was superior to what I had heard in December at Syracuse’s (New York) Regal Destiny USA’s RPX screen. I was hearing more instruments and movement of sound to better effect.

I’m loving the ‘Arclight Presents’ film series, although whoever over at Warner’s did the 2K DCP of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ should have been kicked in the knees there were so many flaws, you wouldn’t have believed the movie was shot on 70mm film stock in the first place (it looked like a projected DVD) – the 2K bluray is far and away the better transfer (creating a new 4K DCP should be paramount). The 5.1 sound though was the highlight.

did a double feature of ‘Big Hero 6’ and ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ (HFR-3D) today on the ‘widescreen’ screen (auditorium 6) and my impression was cemented that it’s in my top five favorite screens in the DC area. The screen is impressively wide at 65 feet and the auditorium is tall. Dolby Atmos sound is staggering as it’s not played back to obscene high volume levels as it is on AMC Tysons' ETX screen. The pinpointing of sound is enveloping and extends the aural imaging around the image as well as the standard side and rear surround channels. Numerous music cues and sound effects, notably in ‘The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies’ achieved this illusion to astonishing nuanced soundscaping.

not real recent comment but I have say, ‘Gone Girl’s immersive 7.1 surround soundmix really showed off auditorium 1’s sound system to fantastic effect.

My fingers are crossed that the acclaimed Russian film ‘Leviathan’ which is opening later in the month will be shown on screen 1, since Sony is releasing the DCP’s of this in 4K.

just recently saw ‘Into the Woods’ here on the RPX screen – the 7.1 sound was decent not great – for a musical, that’s expected. As to the theater, not to keen with the huge RPX lettering just to the left and right of the screen (on the adjacent walls). The biggest flaw I noted was that some light from below the screen either from the wall or stair lighting is being projected back onto the screen which causes reflection thus ruining any scene in the movie that is dark or low lit. [Side comment: I wanted to belt the teenagers behind me during the movie who were making some really rude highly explicit comments during the movie – not cool]

why DID ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Grease’ start their runs in 35mm – when 70mm had already been in place to begin with?

Giles commented about "Dolby looks to kill the IMAX giant with new ultra-bright laser projection" on Dec 12, 2014 at 10:22 pm

This in my mind is a good thing – theaters with IMAX screens get stuck with IMAX ‘films’ – good or bad, if it’s an underperformer, their stuck with it. Theaters that have their own speciality large screens have the upper hand with presenting more films than what IMAX has licensed to show. Add to the fact that Christie has laser projectors in the pipeline for theaters to install and boost the brightness for 3D features; and speciality screens can feature more speakers and/or Dolby Atmos, Auro 11.1 sound – IMAX seems antiquated.

finally saw a movie here: ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ – the Dolby Atmos system on screen 7 is the perfect example on how, why and possible for medium size auditoriums can feature and present Atmos mixed films.

3D presentations are complimented and achieved with Dolby glasses.

so have any of you Seattle folk been to see the new Hunger Games movie? how does the new laser image look? how does the Dolby Atmos setup sound? How are the speakers configured since there is balcony seating? I’m thinking of trekking out to see the last Hobbit movie here.

I’m currently having a beef with the AFI Silver – apparently they are too good to be showing the latest Jean-Luc Godard’s experimental 3D Film, ‘Goodbye to Language’ – got a message from them saying they will not be showing this, whereas the Wexner Center for the Arts can pencil in two showings, but for the AFI to show a one off screening or something – no can do … guess AFI doesn’t find Godard revelant any more (and yet this also won a prize at Cannes this year). I should just stay in Iowa City, after Thanksgiving and see it there at their Film Scene theater – unbelievable.

“The soundtrack for this week’s showing was from the “5.1” mix which seemed to be nothing more than a 5.1 “safe” downmix of the orignial 6-channel for non 6-track theatres (or older players without the “Special Venue” version of the 6D). Normally, the AFI/Silver gets the 6-channel discs…not this time however.”

well that makes me feel slightly better that I missed it this go around – how frickin' annoying.

Giles commented about AFI Silver Theatre on Nov 20, 2014 at 5:22 pm

actually ‘Pulp’ was on screen 2.

I’ve seen quite a few movies on screen 3 and personally I like the smallness of it – it’s comes across as more as a private screening.

how come I miss all the scuffles ? I was more than likely still at Potbelly having dinner.

[side comment: I was over at the Arclight today trying attempt number two to see ‘Big Hero 6’, well they ARE still trying to calibrate the two Dolby Atmos audio systems – as a result screens 6 and 7 aren’t playing anything (yet), even though I had bought a ticket yesterday to see the film at 12:05pm today – had a quick look see into screen 6 – whoah – it’s really large – I can NOT WAIT to see a movie here!

Landmark Bethesda is going to get serious competition since the Arclight is advertising it’s auditoriums as ‘black box’ – low level (no?) lighting (think Cinema Arts – the only light in the auditorium is from the screen – it’s pitch black) – I hate (hate… HATE!) the new ambient wall lighting at Bethesda since it remains on during the movie and ruins any and all dark scenes – it’s as if they know that seniors frequent Bethesda and don’t want them tripping up or down the stairs when the movie is playing]

oh, I was right next door last night at the ‘Pulp: A Film about Life, Death and Supermarkets" during '2001’

interestingly I saw ‘National Gallery’ before hand and I thought it was interesting for a documentary the curtains were used.

for a THX auditorium (screen 1) – I had forgotten how utterly quiet it is, during the end credits which had no music —– you could literally hear a pin drop.

the wait for the Dolby Atmos systems (on screen 6 and 7) is driving me crazy – apparently they are STILL being installed / calibrated. Both ‘Big Hero 6’ and tomorrow’s ‘Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1’ have been pulled /unadvertised as such.

I find it embarrassing that the seats not only in the Cinema Club auditoriums but also quite a few in auditorium 2 the backs are or have fallen off, and looking a bit ratty – for the neighborhood this theater is in, this isn’t acceptable in my opinion.

Giles commented about Bethesda Row Cinema on Oct 27, 2014 at 9:48 pm

the worst renovation aspect that Landmark enacted was the adding of the lighting on the walls of the auditoriums – they don’t go fully off during the feature and thus ruins any and all scenes in the movies where it is darkly lit or a night scene. (‘Love is Strange’ looked like crap) It’s blatant and really REALLY visually distracting – it’s made me rethink of seeing movies here. I’m curious in knowing since the Arclight and Ipic theater (which opens this week) will factor in if Landmark might book one of the screens here with more eclectic programming (such as ‘week long run’ features, as they do with E Street; “Force Majeure” run here at Bethesda suggests that they are). Landmark seriously needs to bring more movies to the DC area closer to their New York City/L.A release dates, we use to in the 1970-80’s – we’ve slipped somehow.

Secondly the new seats maybe more comfortable and larger, but there’s not a lot of room from your knees to the seat in front of you, letting people get around you is a major pain in the ___.

Giles
Giles commented about Movies at Montgomery Mall on Oct 27, 2014 at 9:10 pm

from the video you provided thebrat it sounds that there are two auditoriums that can showcase 35mm presentations. I also like the fact that the representative states that the lighting is up to spec and in my opinion will supercede the crappy renovations that Landmark did to their downtown Bethesda location, which throws so much light from off the walls during the actual movie thus diminishing the pop and light from the screen itself.

AMC Shirlington is the closet theater that only features foreign/indie fare. I doubt that any of these theaters feature start of the art 7.1 sound … do they?
