The Summer Movie Series at the Ohio is unrivaled, I have many memories of “the air conditioned splendor of the mighty pleasuredome” from the years I lived there.
It is sad that the carbon arch projectors have been retired, though the theatre will surely benefit from the fact that the projector will now be manager run rather than projectionist run, lowering the theatre payroll. It was inevitable, and good for Landmark to wait until the Ken’s projectionist retired to make this major change.

In my experience, Jan/Feb/Mar are the slowest. This is at art houses. I believe it has to do with several things, including weather, the holiday/Oscar push just ending, and anticipation of summer and more people going out.
Visited the Egyptian for the first time yesterday for the taping of the pre Oscar episode of “Film Week”, what a treat. Hollywood Blvd still has that magic feeling to it.
Any current contacts or up to date info on what is happening with the Fox would be appreciated. I’m currently living in Riverside and am willing to volunteer my time and theatre operation experience with whomever is currently working to restore the Fox.
This is very sad. I recently came across a box off old vacation photos of a military family that I do not know and one of the pictures was taken in front of the Waikiki.
All that for a Footlocker?! Progress, be damned!
So sad to hear that it has closed. I saw a midnight of “Quadrophenia” there in 1998, the same lineup was playing as is shown in this picture, so I assume it was the same time. Here’s hoping someone can breathe life back into this great venue.
The most timely feature of the Ken Cinema is their use (still!) of carbon arch reel-to-reel projectors. If you sit far enough back in the auditorium (my favorite spot was three rows from the back, centered), you can hear the projector bell chiming to alert the projectionist that the current reel is nearing the end.
This is an amazing theatre. I was lucky enough to see a midnight show of “Taxi Driver” there last winter, the place was packed. The architecture is brilliant. Leave it to Landmark to keep those art houses thriving.
I was blessed to have worked at the Cove until its final days. I miss it and Spencer Wilson very much. Sad that even though it’s not a theatre anymore there is not an ounce of history left standing at 7730 Girard Avenue anymore.

The Lido is technically part of the Fox Theatre, which is currently being renovated.
