if this theatre is taken over by another company, it will be the 5th owner in its 25 year existence. CJM, Clearview, Bow-tie, Cine Grand. It will have an uphill battle trying to compete with AMC 3 miles up the road. Even when I worked there up till 2004, it never did the business it was capable of.
KGordonMurray, there is a guy named Jimmy Letts who does rigging at the arena in Newark. He is a 536 member and works at the Arts Center during the summer. I asked him once if he had a projectionist in the family and said he did. He also stated to me that I as a projectionist was a loser. I now go out of my way to avoid him. I have been doing the job for 43 years.
The plan was to split it into 3 theatres from what I read. One theatre would use the original screen and the other two would be in the rear of the auditorium. It shouldn’t take that long. Its already been 4 months. When I worked with GCC in the 70s we split theatres in less than 2 months.
Today is the day of the auction at this theatre. A buddy of mine just scored an entire JBL sound system and speakers. I heard the movie screens went for $200.00. Would be curious how much the digital projectors went for.
These theatres do not have the right formats programmed in on their projectors. When digital is first set up, there are all types of formats they program. One is for events. They set it up to match everything to the theatres Flat and Scope images. If this was never done, or if the settings called macros are lost (which can happen in an extreme software or hardware failure), then it reverts to a pre set ratio, which is what you saw yesterday. I always to Cinemark in Hazlet and have not had any problems yet.
HowardBHass, you have all the details correct. Organ will be before all movies. Showtime is usually 8pm, except the double feature which will be 2pm. And thank you for the compliment. World class, I don’t know about that. I just love what I do. I try my best with what Im given to work with.
Print of Pretty Woman looked really great tonite. Nice crowd. not one of our bigger crowds. I was interviewed by a young woman doing a paper for her studies. She wanted to interview people in jobs that are going away. I took her on a nice journey thru my 43 years. She was pleased and fascinated about how film ran and what went into it. And had another visitor, Mr HowardBHass. Always nice to see him.
This theatre, as well as the Bernardsville Cinema and the Jerry Lewis Twin Cinema in Carteret NJ were all owned by the same man. When Jerry Lewis Cinemas went bankrupt, the theatres were told to change their front signage. This owner worked on a shoe string budget and never had the money to change them. The one in Carteret kept its signage until it closed in late 1984.
bigjoe59, the brochures were on a table just outside the entrance to cinema 2. As for the movies that never come out, sometimes the movie needs to be reworked or the film companies just keep pushing it back to maybe not compete against too many blockbusters.
bigjoe59, as I remember, I think we had them for a little over a week. I know I got one the first day I was working there. That was an amazing run. 11 weeks and 377 shows and the print went back dirt and scratch free. It was a very proud run for myself and the other 2 projectionists that ran it.
I agree with both of you that its a good thing its still a cinema showing movies. The other thing Im really not a fan of is the whole dine-in thing. Went to an AMC one once and that was it. AS I said Im old school, having been a projectionist now for 42 years. Im glad at least Im still called on to run 70MM once in a while.
According to the website today they are undergoing a remodel and please pardon their dust.

Late 1973 and one of their opening attractions was a 1970 movie

KGordonMurray, Jerry still lives in Asbury Park. 97 years old. I spoke to him in January. I will mention you to him next time I talk to him.

Closed on Nov 30,1991. I was there the night it closed. I was one of the two projectionists that worked there.
That would be me. Seems like yesterday.
Jersey Shore Hurricane News had an article that this theatre is scheduled to close due to the Frank Theatre bankruptcy.
Don’t forget tonight at 8 pm, The Breakfast Club in 35MM with organ before. Print is almost brand new. All seats 5 dollars
When I cleaned screens for Clearview years ago I was impressed at how it was tripled. Very unique. Lets hope it gets going again.
I guess the longer this sits closed, the more likely it will deteriorate and likely be torn down or stripped down
Probably another shopping center
I was told a little more than 775 people for last nights second night showing.

One year ago today I started running Phantom Thread in 70MM in Cinema 2, the Kings Cinema.
3 years ago today I started running The Hateful 8 in 70MM in Cinema 12
moviebuff82, I think I read that the entire mall is going the way of other malls that have failed. Its pretty much vacant
