This ad is from the eighties and it has that same name. I think you are correct that it went XXX and was not tracked anymore. Is the address there?

The Ronkonkoma was definately open into the eighties. That’s a short time only 6 years that it played legit films.

It’s the same building, 1984 must be when they cut it up.

My mother recently said that she thinks she saw The Greatest Show on Earth at the Glenwood and that she remembers it was years after it played everywhere else.

1359 seats cut in half should have been big theatres?

I don’t have the address, only an ad from when it was showing porno, unfortunately the bottom where the address is was torn off.

UA managed to keep this house in pretty good shape until it closed.

That could be the theatre but it reopened 2 more times for a short time. Once they tried porno but it only lasted a few weeks. I think it might have closed for good around 1985.

Is this the theatre that used to be called Merrick Mall Cinema? (it was not in a mall ) That theatre opened and closed a few times finally closing for good in the mid 80’s. It had a long modern front and a great scope screen?

Warren
The live show proved so popular in October 79, that it was brought back for an encore run in February of 1980 for 6 more weeks. That is when I saw it. The tickets were $8- $15.

Even though the lobby was not that big, the Community had two concession stands when it was first twinned. This was one of the Diaz theatres then along with the Ridgewood, Colony, Jackson & Plaza. They also operated the Queens with XXX.

Besides the bookings you also have to take into account the condition the place was in.

Thats interesting about the lease, I always used to wonder why this was never open for matinees in the summer when they had big movies.

I’m suprised business fell off here, there was not really any theatres around until you drove to Rockville Center or Valley Stream.

The Lawrence was converted to a twin right? It was done around the same time these other 2 were built.

I remember when it was a big deal to go to one of the twin theatres because they were new and something different. It’s funny Century’s had theatres all over the island and was so slow to plex them, they seemed to close alot of loactions that might have made money.

It’s always funny how that happens. I remember in Brooklyn The Marine which was just ok was always crowded. The Brook which was a beautiful house was never full when I went there.

What a screen. It looks like 70mm, it must have been some place. Whoever decided to tear this down should have been shot.
