Don’t even look like the marquee in the movie TIMES SQUARE, the girl in the movie sings on top of the marquee, some great shots of 42nd st. in the movie.
I was SO fortunate to be able to enjoy this theatre in 1981, Many 70MM engagements, a re release of The Rose and Divine Madness in 70MM, was a highlight. The third Omen movie, Southern Comfort also ran in 70. Currently this is a very SAD theatre, made SMALL with a very SMALL screen, nothing near what it was. Such a disappointment!
Take a couple photos of the cornerstone and the theatre. I’m 2 hrs away and do not have time, unfortunally. Do you know when demolition is slated to start?
Such an awesome marquee, it should be saved and the neon restored, they are not made like this anymore,,,, move it to a new theatre and restore it.. It appears to be similar to the PIX that was on Hollywood Blvd,(Now Henry Fonda Theatre, they should of kept the neon marquee) huge flashing neon colors, just beautiful !!
The influx of home movies and early video did it, many legit houses died because of the video craze in early 80’s to now……Also suburban multi houses were the rage from 76- now and downtown houses closed because they could not compete with the free parking, mulit choice movies etc,,,after a couple years of adult entertainment they usually closed and were left abandonded such as the houses in Detroit, The UA, Michigan, Madison, Grand Circus, State Gem,Century and even the very glamourous FOX took runs at adult fare mid 70’s to try to sustain business..downtown areas became dangerous and people opted for the safer burbs.. good bye grand movie palaces of the past. At least some ran a while longer with the porn and had some extra life. Most are demolished or redone and made a legit live venue..
A good companion book ,‘LOST DETROIT, Stories behind the Motor City’s majestic ruins’. its new…and ‘Detroit’s Downtown Movie Palace’s’…out for a few years. Both are good books, and I will be adding this book to my library.
‘'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century’‘ was out in 1978,(I think,I drove to the movie so it had to be then) they then made the TV show from the movie, Gil Gerard was the star of both.

I have some new pictures of the Fox. I was there for an event on May 29, 2010. I know some inside pictures are a little dark, but all in all, they are pretty good.
YES sounds like a winner to me! 35Th Anniversary Released to theatres for a special 2 week run,( on their largest screen, remember this is made for the big wide screen) then onto blu ray,,,,and my widescreen tv. OH YEA…
I had a friend that lived just around the corner on Wealthy from the theatre. We walked over to see Caligula. We had a blast, I had seen it many times, this was his first viewing. He was shocked, horrified, and loved it.
Ruby was always billed with CARRIE..
It was shown in the main theatre, #1.

I worked at this theatre in 1981. I started at the end of the Caligula run.
