I had a wander around this the other day. Inside is absolutely stripped out, nothing to see.

It’s equally sad and fascinating for me, as it’s the only glimpse I’ve had of it as a single screen.

I’ve had a good explore behind the false walls and the proscenium and those decorative features are all still there.

I wasn’t born until 1976, so unfortunately I’ve never seen it without the metal covering and I’m yet to see any colour photos of it from before the 80s.

Can you remember what colour the exit door would have been?

Alas, the Ritz is no more. It sat boarded up for a few years in the hope that someone would bring it back to some sort of use, but the bulldozers have now brought it down.

What a waste of a beautiful interior. I understand that they want it dark, but they could have still highlighted the details in it.

Looks like the filming of Modern Family caught the locals by surprise.

A old cinema that they wanted demolished, and has now mysteriously caught fire? Wow, what are the odds?

The pictures on 28DL no longer show up, but there’s an upsetting/angering recent picture here.

Why bother ripping stuff out if you’re not going to use the building? At least let it sit in its original, unspoiled state until you’ve decided what to do with it, or sell it on and let the new owners decide.

It would seem the writing’s on the wall for the Curzon. Permission has been granted to flatten in to make way for supermarket space.

I’d be happy to take that fork off your hands. It’ll sit next to my Odeon fork with the Rank logo on it.

It doesn’t matter what the genre. Everything looks better on a bigger screen. Scale impresses. That’s why we love Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Grand Canyon, the Pyramid of Giza, etc..

Why on Earth would they do something like that? My brain struggles to comprehend why we aren’t still striving to create things like this. To destroy such things is just utter lunacy.

Hi Andi, I would love an opportunity to tour the rest of the building. I have been in the projectionist room (and had my first “scary pigeon” moment in there), but missed out on the fly tower due to my comically underpowered torch.

UPDATE: The former Grand will be staying with for a few more years yet. It was bought in auction a few weeks ago, and is being turned into a church. The Pastor is a local man with as much nostalgic appreciation for the building as I, so won’t be ripping everything out, and has plans for Screen 2 to be refitted back into a small cinema (not that 300+ seats is considered small these days).

Some echoes of Odeon Aylesbury in the design.
