Opened on June 22, 1953, this cinema was situated on the corner of Meade and Market Streets. The architechts were Messrs Spykermann and Verhagen, and building cost was 35,000 pounds. The cinema was owned and run by Mrs Ruth Giles. The colour scheme was dark bronze, green and gold - with a green stage curtain imported from Holland. The theatre seated 1200 - of which 400 seats were in the gallery.
It was converted to a two-screen complex in the 1970s, and finally closed down in the mid-90s, due to the opening of a Ster Kinekor multiplex in the town. Theatre is dark at the moment.

Marnuse;
Many thanks for posting (what is currently) the 1st cinema on this site in the country of South Africa. S.A is certainly under-researched and documented (are there any books published on S.A cinemas?) I am sure it had (even has) many wonderful cinema theatre buildings. Please add more if you know details of them.
Thanks again.
