Not to be confused with the Nob Hill Cinema, located on California Street, this Nob Hill Cinema opened on November 21, 1969 with “House of Passion”. By 1971 it had become a gay male porn cinema. It had previously been a jazz club named Club Hangover.

Listings described it as ‘One of the best run, state-of-the-art video arcades in the city’. It also features ‘live acts’ on the stage nowadays. The owners retired and sold the building. It closed August 19, 2018.

As the Club Hangover it was a jazz club that featured many live radio broadcasts and the likes of performers such as Turk Murphy, Muggsy Spanier, Earl Fatha Hines, etc.

As the Nob Hill in the film days (before going to video showings) it featured the best projection of any gay male porn theater. Gay porn auteur, Wakefield Poole (who had a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art a few years ago) showed many of his famous films at the Nob Hill, including “Boys in the Sand”, and “Bijou”

Poole’s 1977 film, “Take One” is actually set in the Nob Hill.

A jazz club? Sounds more like a jizz club!

The Nob Hill Theater in SF is a gay men’s strip club that allows the strippers and audience to do certain “unmentionable acts to themselves” during the shows. I have seen asian women recently in the theater. It is very odd.

Don’t get me wrong I love the theater because of that reason but I go there to be with men only! When I see a woman I really get turned off!

Has anyone been lately? I was masturbating to the live performer ( who was also masturbating) and an Asian woman turned around in the aisle in front of me and staarted watching me. I was very turned off!

the 1st time i visited San Francisco was 1980 and the last time was 8? years ago. my point being simple. in the early years they hosted many different types of gay porn stars. boy next door types, Abecrombie & Fitch model types as well studly masculine types. yet in the 8 years since my last visit the only gay porn stars they seem to host are studly masculine types. what gives? isn’t variety the spice of life?

Hey Gadfly, did you ever visit the apartment under the Nob Hill Theater? Is it still there? I bought the issue of AD from ebay just to see what you were talking about and it’s amazing. Whatever happened to Clif?
