Cinema

The Cinema opened on February 1, 1969 with a seating capacity of 200. It was intended to cater to an adult audience. Its opening attraction was “The Magus” from 20th Century Fox. The interior of the theatre was done in a knotty pine desingn with green accents.

The theatre was located on Broadway just west of Main street in downtown Salt Lake City. It eventually reverted to all porn. Later new ownership called the theatre Cinema In Your Face and started a program of art films. It was rather successful with the new programming and when the Tower Theatre was acquired by the new owners they closed the Cinema. It became a night club for a while and then was demolished in 2002.

This was the only porn theater in Utah. It had closed in 1986(prior to Cinema in Your Face) as a porn theater and actually got a write-up in Variety as “Utah’s Only Porner Shuts For Good”. (Today, it is almost impossible to get porn in Utah, even by mail-order. At the time this theater operated, porn videos were illegal to rent or buy in Utah.)

By 1986, the Cinema may have been the last “porner” in Utah. but in its last years, the former State Theater operated as the Esquire Theatre and showed porn, at least through December, 1972, when I left Salt Lake for the navy. There was also another little porner called The Palace that operated for some time around the late ‘60s-early '70s. I think it was in the same general area as the Cinema.
