This is a classic downtown theatre which opened as the Hamly Theatre inearly-1920. It was renamed Royal Theatre on November 16, 1928 and had 1,100 seats. It was “updated” sometime in the 1980’s with a brick façade that gives it a generic look, but this is an old theatre. The “updating” moved inside, too. The snack bar and ticket window have been paneled. However, the main auditorium hasn’t been touched. It has a unique “rounded” look complete with a large balcony.
The ‘twin’ is the next door building. It’s been incorporated into the existing old one-screen theatre. Something has happened to the Royal’s marquee because it is missing, leaving it with a rather flat look.

Growing up in Pauls Valley meant attending the Royal Twin practically every weekend. We also had Brewer’s Drive-in, but it’s now gone. I haven’t talked to the current owners of the Royal, but I wish them well. My wife and I have been back to PV a couple of times and the Royal is looking a little rough, especially its “twin” side. One thing about a wet climate. It’s tough on roofs. Since saving and promoting “classic” downtown movie theatres is becoming more than a hobby, it seems, I’d like to put these owners in contact with a company that produces fundraisers for such causes. I tell everybody about this Cinema Treasures site, interested parties should contact me either through these message boards or my web address. ()

I’d love to see the Royal Twin get ahold of the Esquire’s marquee. It’s the only thing left of value at the old, closed, nearly destroyed, Hobart, OK, theatre. It is a fantastic triangle-shaped marquee that would make the Royal’s flat front jump out at you. And what would be wrong with The Esquire Royal Twin Theatre? Think about it Pauls Valley. Just a suggestion.

The Royal Twin has recently undergone and amazing interior restoration with PLUSH, high-end rockerback seating and BOXED seating in the balcony! Both theaters are redone and lovely! It’s a pleasure to go to the movies in Pauls Valley!
I went by today, but unfortunately the Royal was locked. I went across the street to the Chamber of Commerce and asked about it. They said the original owner’s son now owns and runs it.
Looks well kept up, but does need a marquee. There is another old theatre about three blocks west of there that is now office space. Perhaps it could send it’s marquee to the east side of town.
