Status should be closed/demolished. It was operated by the Blumenfeld chain, and was located at the corner of Fruitridge Rd and Stockton Blvd in Sacramento. No trace of the Drive-in remains, site is now home to a shopping center and Rite-Aid store.
The Fruitridge Drive-In had a unique feature, heated speakers. Affixed to the speaker you would hang from your car window was a small electric heater. This San Diego expatriate had never seen such a feature at drive-ins and was a very welcome treat on cool Sacramento winter nights. I couldn’t use the weather as an excuse not to go.
This was the only drive-in I ever saw where such a feature was offered to its patrons!
One of the drive-in theatres where I go to with my family often.Movies seen:Woodstock,Super Fly,Billy Jack……..the list goes on and on.The popcorn there was delicious!!
Seeing these comments made me remember when a friend of mine’s brother-inlaw who was a projectionest at this drive-in let a few of us watch movies for free in the first row. We’d ride our bicycles up to the drive-in right before it got dark. After the movies were over we’d throw our bikes in the back of Rick’s truck and he would drive us back home!
I grew up going to movies at Fruitridge Drive-in. My parents used to take me all the time in the summer. I remember playing at the playground next to the snackbar in my PJs until the cartoons started.
It’s nice to see comments about how people spent their younger days at this drive-in. It puts a smile on a person’s face…… :).
