In an old article, the Christian Chronicle wrote that the Harrington family opened the Calvert in 1953. And the contemporary accounts bear that out.

Motion Picture Herald, Aug. 8, 1953: “Paul Harrington, of nearby Covington, Ky., has opened his new Calvert drive-in, at Calvert City, Ky., of which S. H. Pewitt is manager.”

Motion Picture Herald, March 27, 1954: “Paul Harrington, owner, has closed his Calvert theatre, Calvert City, Ky., and opened his Calvert drive-in for the summer.”

From FB

As much as we liked the old box office it was only in held in place by a faith. A good wind would have taken it away. Many times last summer we scooted it back in place. We tried to salvage it but water damage was too extensive. So, we built a new one with a little more space and functionality. We wanted it to resemble the original one. Stay warm out there. We will see you all again soon.

Great news! It has been recently announced that the Calvert Drive-In has been bought by Seth and Tabitha Manea. They are planning to reopen it in June with as few changes as possible.

I have not yet had the pleasure of visiting the Calvert; hopefully I can get down there either this summer or the next.

Interesting. It appears that this drive-in is just north of the I-24/KY 95 intersection, but also that there is no access from I-24. From the overhead it appears that you could watch part of the movie while driving east unless the trees are in the way.

This theater was built by Paul Harrington Sr., who also designed it. It is still operated by the Harrington family.
