CHILDRESS Plans for erection of a new $50,000 theater to replace the Palace Theater, which was destroyed by fire here two weeks ago, have been announced by R.O. Layton, manager.

The new building will be on the site of the old Palace but will have enlarged seating capacity and more modern equipment. Scott Dunne, Dallas architect, has been engaged to draw plans for the new structure …

Left out a word in above comment. Childress has been named a Texas Main Street Community.

Great things continue to happen in Childress. The city has been named a Texas Main Community, and our beautiful Palace will be the star attraction on our vintage brick Main Street. For information about the Palace project and our progress, check us out at www.rememberthepalace.com . You’ll like what you see, swoop80, Patsy, and Don Lewis. Patsy, will you send this to Ross Melnick?

Jude – congrats on this! Please keep us updated. Also – I have some questions regarding use of the theater when ready. Is there a website or facebook page, etc where I can ask a question or 2? Any contact info for that would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the encouragement Patsy. Our community sees now that this is going to happen and we are getting great support. One couple has given us two classic vehicles which we hope to sell in 2013. One is a 1976 Cadillac ElDorado convertible, beautiful and in perfect condition. The other is a 1974 International Harvester pickup truck, yellow with green, so-ugly-its-cute, with original sales papers! Can’t wait to find the right owners for these!

I have sent Ross Melnick an email re: making that change…stay tuned.

And what a wonderful idea to have this theatre restored in time for the 2014 County All-School Reunion…perhaps Mr. Dobbs will attend and add his celebrity status to the fun! And yes, this theatre’s status should be changed from closed to RENOVATING!

Excuse me, our status needs to be changed from “closed” to “restoring”!

The Palace Theater, as of 2011,sports a restored facade in original colors, as well as the orginal c.1937 vertical neon (restored in 2010). The roof was replaced fall 2012, and the Palace restoration committee will proceed with an interior demolition early in 2013. All work thus far has been done with monies from local fundraisers. The proposed opening date of The Palace is September 2014, in time for the Childress County All-School Reunion. After calling in the “pros”, we believe our restoration will run less than $500,000. Grant writing will be done in 2013. How do we get our status changed from “closed” to “renovating”?

Check out our website: www.childresspalacetheater.com for photos of the recent facade facelift of The Palace as well as pics of our fundraising events. The Palace was dressed up and ready—not to mention “drop dead gorgeous”—for the September 23 block party during All-School Reunion. Next phase of the restoration is a new roof.

As Shirley MacLaine sang in “Sweet Charity” —“If they could see me now, that little gang of mine”… Well Folks, it’s time to take another look at The Palace Theater where “Charity” showed in 1969! She is no longer the “leprous” tan of the past few years. Restoration of the facade is now in progress with refurbished stucco and a beautiful white, with red trim, paint job. The facelift should be complete in 3 or 4 weeks when windows are re-installed and the portico, box office & Palace Barber Shop entry are all restored. All work is being done according to detail shown in an oil-tinted photograph from 1941 when The Palace was only 4 years old. A block party to celebrate the completion of this phase of restoration will be held September 23 during Childress County’s All-School Reunion. It’s time to take another look at The Palace. Those alumni are going to be blown away. Let’s post a picture of The Palace and Main Street in Childress, Texas, going forward!

creed: Thanks for the Dobb update…you’d think he would want to contribute to this hometown theatre cause!

Unfortunately no help has been forthcoming from Mr. Dobbs. We will continue towards our goal of restoring this “Grand Old Lady”. One day we will be be open for business again.

Don: Nice photos of the new marquee so just perhaps Mr.Dobbs, hometown boy took a second look at his hometown cinema and decided to help. He may have even read our emails and CT posts! If so, hope he mentions it on his daily radio show. Someone from CT should call in!

By the way, the ‘57 Chevy giveaway was the brainchild of “creed” and it was very a very successful means of getting the community more involved in The Palace Restoration. Thanks for the encouraging comments on our exciting task.
