The Sunset Drive-In Was Still In Operation In 1960, Even As Early As 1957. During Its Early Years, It Survived A Robbery And A Sandstorm.

The Feb. 22, 1960 BoxOffice reported: “A terrific wind and sandstorm Tuesday (9) damaged several Video circuit drive-ins. … The Sunset, owned by O. A. Branson, at Muskogee also was damaged.”

Later on the same page, it mentioned that two of the visitors at Oklahoma City’s Filmrow were “Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Branson, Sunset at Muskogee, whose screen tower was blown down before they had a chance to reopen”.

Abandoned Oklahoma has a series of 2011 photos showing what’s left of the place, including “literally thousands of football helmets”.

A more accurate address for this theater is 3451 Old Shawnee Rd, Muskogee, OK 74403. This points directly to the entrance road. The address above is incorrect. Ramps are still visible.

Please update.

If you go to Google Maps and do a street view of the property, you can see the “For Sale” sign and phone number to call assuming you are still interested.

As of 2012, the screen is still up. However, it is in such poor condition that it will have to be rebuilt. Otherwise, the concession stand/projection booth and marquee are gone, so it is basically an empty field.

The property is in a decent location. Across from the high school with the entrance and exit on the auxiliary or feeder road which is adjacent to the main highway. However, it will take a major investment to bring it back.

The original owners were my grandparents, Otis and Thelma Branson. Back then, it was very family oriented and a wonderful place to go.
