Could the claim in the description that this theater opened in 1918 be a typo that was meant to read 1928? The Union is not listed in the 1926 FDY, as such a large house surely would have been, and also there is this item datelined Attleboro from the May 9, 1927 issue of Exhibitors Daily Review: “Architect R. M. Stowell, 184 Boylston St., Boston, preparing plans for $150,000 theatre, 90x115, at Union St. Owner, Union Theatre, Inc., care architect.”

James- The MGM Reports for the Union Theatre and also the Bates in Attleboro are now on line. Go to the Theatre Historical Society website www.historictheatres.org ;on the Home Page, click “Research” and then click “American Theatres Architectural Archive” in the drop-down box. Next, click “Explore the collections in the on-line catalog”. Next, type “New England Special Collection” in the search box. (That’s what they call the MGM Theatre reports). The Bates is card #9, and the Union is card # 10 right at the beginning. Once you get the card, there is a button to click on to enlarge it, and then you can copy it on your printer.

The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Union Theatre. Says it’s on Dunham St., is in Good condition, and has been showing MGM product for 6 years. There were 788 orchestra seats and 313 balcony seats, total: 1,101. There is an exterior photo dated April 1941.

From Boxoffice magazine, February 4, 1956:

“In the most extensive cooperation promotion ever seen in this area, 14 Providence and nearby houses used record-breaking newspaper advertising space in heralding the joint premiere of "The Day the World Ended” and “Phantom from 10,000 Leagues.” Virtually taking over the amusement pages of the local press for several days, the following houses united in the ad: Elmwood, Hope, Uptown, Liberty, Castle, all in this city; Community, Centredale; Strand, Pawtucket; Union, Attleboro; Hollywood, East Providence; Palace, Cranston; Community, Wakefield; Park, Auburn; Palace, Arctic and Stadium, Woonsocket. A brief checkup of local houses indicated that opening days were solid."

An article on the Union Theatre, contrasting the old marquee with the new and offering additional photos along with the story, can be found in Boxoffice Magazine, January 7, 1950. Page 33.

I am producing a show for the local cable station in Attleboro featuring the Union Theatre. The show’s format will actually be a tongue in cheek ghost hunt. We would be very interested in hearing about any anecdotes or stories (especially anything “weird”). Pictures are welcome as well, although if you wish for them to be used on the show we will not be able to pay you for them. Please contact Neil at or look for updates coming soon at www.nkgproductions.com Thank you for your help, and I look forward to hearing form you.

Around 2000-2002 the Triboro Youth Theatre (www.triboroyouththeatre.org) rented the theatre from Samia Corp., and performed broadway musicals. They removed the large dividing wall (that was created to have more than one movie screen) that brought back the original seating capacity on the lower level, removed the movie screens and drywall covering up the original vaudeville stage, and added a 20 foot by 40 foot (approx.) stage extension. They performed musicals such as South Pacific and even had professional flying equipment to perform Peter Pan. They packed the house, but now perform at Thacher Elementary School’s theatre in Attleboro.
