Central Theatre, Ely, NV - 2013

The historic Central Theatre is located in downtown Ely on W. 15th Street. The Art Deco style single screen theater opened on March 31, 1941 and was built for Percy W. & Walter Hull. Interior decorations were carried out to the plans of Hugo Clausen. Seating for 731 was located on a single level. It showed first-run movies. The Central Theatre was closed in December 2011.

It was reopened on May 28, 2012. In December 2013, it was purchased by Christopher Lani & Don Purinton, both of Ely. It was converted to digital projection late-February 2014.

The Central Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

I worked here as a teen in the late 50’s and early 60’s. The box office was between the doors. That was in the days when John Mariani was the doorman and Vic Walker was the Manager. Great times.

The Central Theater is reopened as of May 28th, 2012. I am managing it and am putting together a group to purchase the theater. Digital conversion should be completed by Sept.

Here’s an interesting line from the NRHP Registration Form for the Central Theatre:

“The original interior had ‘pastel tinting and designing by Hugo Claussen combined with thick carpeting and soft florescent lighting to produce a restful feeling.’”
The form doesn’t specify the source for the quote naming Hugo Clausen (which I believe is the correct spelling of his surname), but it might have been from the Ely Daily Times, which is cited as a general source.
