Slight correction. The Jerry Lewis Twin Cinema opened on May 23rd, 1973 with Jerry Lewis in person. Grand opening ad posted.
NY Daily News listings ended in 1986 for this cinema.
Decoman36, my dad was projectionist at the Jerry Lewis Twin in Carteret NJ. Our Cinema 1 (left) was Blue and our Cinema 2 ( right) was Red. And the Concession stand was in the middle so no one could cross over. And the lobby was in the same color scheme with a huge photo of movie stars on each wall.
Launched May 27, 1970 with the film, “Anne of the Thousand Days.”
Just thought about this theater today. It looks like it’s now a nightclub / office building. Somehow the building with the stated address 1900 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, NY, does not look like the theater building I remember from years ago at all. Was it rebuilt? Nothing too special about this theater. I remember the theater on the left was red, and the one on the right was blue, a super 70’s look. The only film I can remember for sure seeing here was “Going in Style” with George Burns. It was sort of a family film and the theater was packed with kids and their parents. For whatever reason the theater decided to show a coming attraction for the movie “The Shinning”. It was a trailer of the bloody elevator scene in slow motion with some creepy music.It was more intense than the scene in the film itself, If I remember correctly. Let’s just say it did not go over well with most of the people and kids in the audience. I’m sure some of those young kids were quite traumatized, I’m still not over it, lol!
Someone put up a picture of some Dollar store and the movie theater was not in that section of the plaza. It was in the opposite right side of the plaza. It was a great movie theater with 2 movie houses. Small but clean and affordable. It is now a gym.
Wow! The Jerry Lewis Theatres! Haven’t thought about that in ages. The East Meadow Theatres were pretty awful but their programming was down rate amazing. Tons of B movies and horror and the perfect downtrodden place to see them. I have tons of fond memories of this duplex. I even remember the smell. It always smelled like disinfectant. Isn’t crazy what we remember and even cherish. I was still going here as late as the mid-80s. Saw CRIMES OF PASSION and DO THE RIGHT THING back to back in totally empty auditoriums here. It was GREAT!
Jerry Lewis writes in his book “DEAN AND ME” about his cinemas,one of the few places I have ever read about his failed theatres.
No idea. That was probably in the early or mid 80s, when we used to go to Westwood Village every weekend.
That’s happened to me in Westwood, CA, more than once. We were watching some movie and one of the scenes was filmed in front of the theater we were in. Kind of an out of body experience.
When the movie The Hot Rock came out in 1972, we deliberately went to see it at this theatre, knowing scenes were filmed locally. (Filmed all around NY,Brooklyn, too)
Opens with Redford getting out of jail-actually Nassau County on Carmen Ave. Then later when they spring the other guy out, they escape, driving right around the movie theatre (well, the strip mall) we were watching the movie in!
To fill in the gaps, between being a Jerry Lewis and becoming the Flick it was known as the East Meadow twin.

The building is still standing but it is now the North Shore Fitness center.

Marc, through Florin Creative Film Services booked the Flick and the 8th Street Playhouse. Thus the great double features. The people who owned this theatre, also owned the Mini-Cinema. One owner ran Cinema 5 Theatres, the stella art circuit in the 80’s (Cinema I & II, Sutton, etc.)
They used to play some offbeat things here in between the normal bookings. The Jerry lewis Massapequa theatre is not on here yet. I would add it but I am not sure if it was a twin or single screen.
Wow! This one completely slipped my mind and I went here more than a few times in the 70’s and early 80’s. I saw the re-issue of “Vertigo” here in around ‘83, “My Favorite Year” and a reissue of “Jungle Book” (love that movie) around 1984 or so. That’s the last time I remember seeing anything here. It was a decent double theater in a decently maintained but HUGE shopping center right on Hempstead Turnpike in “beautful” East Meadow.
The other Jerry Lewis Cinema that I know of on LI was the one in Massapequa that is not listed on this site (I think…)
