October 20th, 1972 grand opening ad as twin in photo section.
June 6th, 1969 grand opening ad in photo section.
Saw a pic today of the screen nearest the highway. At that time, no logo on the back of the screen.
JAlex, thanks for the info!
Did I hear someone calling?
Opening, as a single screen, took place in June 1969.
Two screen operation began in October 1972.
Don’t recall what year the second screen was added.
Based on an old advertisement I saw in the “St. Louis Flashback: Movie and Drive-In Theaters” page on Facebook, it appears the I-70 opened with only 1 screen. Is that true? If so, when was the second screen added? Paging JAlex…Paging JAlex…
IIRC the one nearest the highway was the original so it couldn’t be seen from the highway. Then the second was added, which faced the highway but was far enough down the hill so as not to be seen. Mid Rivers Dodge (formerly Royal Oaks, which moved into the former cave Springs Cinema site) uses that portion of the property as a parking lot.
Oh, OK…I got the screens mixed up. I was thinking of the screen whose back was to I-70. Only drove past the Mexico Road screen once or twice and don’t remember it. Of course, that part of Mexico Road was rather hilly and undeveloped back then. Thanks for pointing that out, Cholla!
By the way, was Screen #1 the screen whose back was to Mexico Road or I-70? Can’t remember…
The I70 did indeed have their logo on the back of the screen which faced Mexico Road. Driven past it many times, I live about a mile and a half from there.
No, the Holiday held on for another year. The I-70 closed 9/16/1984; the Holiday on 9/1/1985.
JAlex, does this mean the Holiday Drive-In in Overland and the I-70 closed at the same time. These were the two major drive-ins in the Mid-America chain (in fact, M-A’s headquarters were at the Holiday Drive-In), so it would make sense if they both closed together. Any ideas?
Oops…Chuck did it again. :)
For the record, the I-70 did not have an interstate symbol on the back of one of the screens. It was actually on top of the marquee. The Dodge dealership that was built in its place has changed from Zeiser Dodge to Mid Rivers Dodge. Still miss that place after all this time…
Ceased operation in September, 1984; an RKO Mid-America operation at the time.
First real date with my husband was at the I 70 Drive-in which was a double date with my sister and her friend! That was over 36 years ago….happy to say that I still have both…hubby and sister. :)
This drive-in pulled in a variety of patrons….those who didn’t want to travel to the city to see a movie and those who wanted to get out of the city.
Opened June 4, 1969. Designed by Martin Bloom & Associates.
