The Plaza Theatre is Calgary’s oldest operating cinema. It was a conversion of a former garage and opened January 10, 1935 with Will Rogers in “Mr. Skitch” & Teddy Joyce in “Business is a Pleasure”. It had 428 seats. Located in the city’s Kensington shopping district, just on the outside of downtown, the Plaza Theatre might not be the fanciest or most up-to-date theatre in Calgary, but that’s the charm. What it lacks in technology, it makes up for in quality and personality. And the popcorn’s pretty darned good, too. It presented movies, live performances & special events.
The Plaza Theatre was closed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was decided not to renew the lease and it is up ‘For Sale. It had reopened by May 2023.

Reopened and showing movies again with new ownership and a remodeled lobby. This is a great place to see a movie.
As the Plaza’s website is advertising current movies again since its reopening, its status should be changed to Open (Showing Movies).
