The South Loop 13 Drive-In opened its gates on June 9, 1950 with Jane Russell in “The Outlaw” along with four unnamed cartoons and an unnamed Our Gang comedy. The South Loop 13 last operated screening a mix of drive-in fare and Spanish films before closing on April 22, 1979.

In the 1973 view, roughly ¼ of the drive-in looks to be closed off and taken over by retail.

The South Loop 13 originally had 1000 speakers! It was the biggest single screen drive in in San Antonio. As time went on the lot was made smaller, and parcels of the property were sold off. The South Loop 13 ended it’s run as a theatre playing Spanish language films

The area has been taken over by a huge shopping area that includes Toys R Us, Office Depot, and Papa John’s Pizza. Entrance used to be across from the South Park Mall main entrance. This drive-in was also featured in Steven Spielberg’s “The Sugarland Express” movie. Goldie Hawn and her co-actor are hiding from police and if you look off to the distance you can see the screen and a couple of cartoons playing in this scene.
