Boxoffice, Nov. 18, 1950: “SULPHER SPRINGS, TEX. - Fire destroyed the Mission Theatre here November 6, damaged an apparel shop, a record shop, and the local PMA office. The buildings were of brick and wood construction. Loss was estimated at $100,000. The theatre was destroyed.”

The Mission Theatre launched March 1, 1916 as a replacement for a previous Mission Theatre that burned. It closed on Mary 14, 2001 with the film, “A Knight’s Tale.” It has since been demolished.

Hello to anyone who may be browsing this photo. I was curious if anyone has any older pictures of this theater? I have a piece of art work that I was told had come from here, but I have yet to see any pictures of it

I worked at the Mission for many years in just about every capacity – concessions, box office, projectionist and janitor. I also worked at the Hi Vue Drive In on occasion. It’s a shame to see them gone.

In the photo on Google, the theater is gone, but you can still see the steps and the handicapped ramp. Too bad.

I’m sad to hear that this lovely theater is gone. Recently, I ran across a couple of photos I took of it back in 1987. Here are the links:

I have Pictures of the Inside and Outside of the Mission “Walk-In” Theatre. It was demolished to make a parking lot for the Bank next door. The HI-VUE Drive In has been closed now for about 30 years. It is slowly crumbling down. In Bad Condition.

Hi Ang and thanks for your comments! I had a feeling that Sulphur Springs had been a thriving town at one time. I was sad about the Mission for more than one reason, I lost pictures on my hard drive and had gone back for more when I found that it was gone. Do you know anything about the Hi Vue drive in?

The news that the old Mission Theater is torn down just about breaks my heart. When I was a teenager, I used to work there with my best friends in high school. It was so great to work there – the “hub” of activity on weekend nights and seeing who was with who, the smell of the popcorn (that machine made the best popcorn I’ve ever had), the old 50s style seating and lighting. I worked there through the renovation to turn it into a double cinema. You wouldn’t believe the pounds of old gum that was stuck to the seats!
Anyway, I have some very fond memories of growing up and visiting the theater and then later, working there.

Come on Seth, didn’t you see any redeeming qualities? Off the interstate, clean air, quiet. I agree about the court house and you would have liked the HI-VUE.

Sulphur Springs is the pits. The courthouse is wonderful, but the rest of the town is dingy, ugly, and depressing. I’m glad I didn’t miss a theater, I’d hate to have to go back.
